No local shootings in the news today, so let's dig up a nine year old one to remind everyone that guns are bad.

Do you know what else is bad? The politicians at Sandy Hook who would not let the school lock the doors during business hours.

How do you think gun shops will handle their inventory leading up to and after passage of IP17 and IP18? They will have about 50ish days to sell firearms in State assuming buyers immediately pass background checks Then they will have an additional 180 days to get remaining inventory out of the State.

If they wait until after IP17 & IP18 pass to bring in last minute inventory they might not receive the inventory in time to sell it to in State buyers. If they buy a bunch of inventory before the election and the measures fail, they may be stuck with extra inventory that doesn't sell well.

Here's a sample of what you'll be seeing on our local news once the IPs pass, just replace California with Oregon:

These sections of IP 17 discuss what an applicant can do if their permit to purchase application is not reviewed and decided on after 30 days. Assuming you took it to court for review after waiting the 30days with no answer, how long do you think the court process would take?

SECTION 5. (1) If the application for the permit-to-purchase is denied, the permit agent shall set forth in writing the
reasons for the denial. The denial shall be placed in the mail to the applicant by certified mail, restricted delivery, within 30
days after the application was made. If no decision is issued within 30 days, the person may seek review under the
procedures in subsection (5) of this section

(5) A person denied a permit-to-purchase or whose permit is revoked or not renewed may petition the circuit court in the
petitioner's county of residence to review the denial, nonrenewal or revocation. The petition must be filed within 30 days
after the receipt of the notice of denial or revocation

8) Petitions filed under this section shall be heard and disposed of within 15 judicial days of filing or as soon as
practicable thereafter.

I am assuming this part means whenever the circuit court feels like getting around to it:

"...as soon as
practicable thereafter."

Huh? What does that have to do with the proposed gun legislation?
"Enough is enough, we have to take action," said Rev. Dr. W. J. Mark Knutson, who serves as Chair of LEVO and is also a pastor at Augustana Lutheran Church.
"The reality is, too many people want to try to say that we are against the Second Amendment. That is not what this is about," said Rev. Dr. J. W. Matt Hennessee. He is a pastor at Vancouver Avenue Baptist Church and serves as Chair for the Inter-Faith Peace & Action Collaborative (IPAC).
Currently, the law prohibits political campaign activity by charities and churches by defining a 501(c)(3) organization as one "which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office."

The gun proposals are not what is considered a political campaign. Same as abortion, same sex marriage, vaccines etc.

The experts here, mostly @Kruel J , have changed my mind. I say don't worry about IP 17 and IP 18. Those IPs and their future amendments won't do squat to restrict your ability to use, possess, and transfer your firearms as you see fit. In fact I would go a step further and not mention these IPs to anyone else. You'll end up looking like a paranoid _____. Nobody wants to be a _____.

"It is significantly more challenging and significantly more expensive" to get initiatives on the ballot two years into the pandemic, in part because many people are still minimizing the time they spend in public places," Blaszak said. "Oregon is more of a cautious environment than Florida is. And because there is a general labor shortage, I think you're looking at a very challenging signature gathering environment."
IP 17 & 18 are mentioned in the article.
The Rev. W. J. Mark Knutson of Augustana Lutheran Church in Portland is one of the chief petitioners for the initiatives and is involved with the associated campaign, Lift Every Voice Oregon. Knutson said the campaign already trained 300 volunteers to collect signatures and plans to train at least 700 more by next month. Volunteers are already out collecting signatures — and asking people to print or request individual signature sheets via their websites, then drop them in the mail.

"It's all doable," Knutson said of collecting the campaign's goal of 140,000 signatures for each of the two initiatives. "You spread it out among many hands."

Volunteers range from middle and high school students to a 92-year-old man who already collected more than 200 signatures, Knutson said. "It's the voice of our young after (the 2018 Parkland, Florida school shooting) that really galvanized us."

Minorities may be afraid to go into police departments to get their permit to purchase which adds a discriminatory angle to IP17 and both IP17 and IP18
Bingo, this is how the bill can be killed; cancel culture is the magic bullet to make this go away. If the ultra-left says it's racist to require voter ID, imagine what they would say about stripping them of their other human rights? That's how you win this battle. Show how long it takes to get a CC permit, show the demographics of the groups that get approved for these, assert that it's because of institutional racism, and apply that logic to the changes proposed in IP17 & 18. Suddenly the ultra-left, BLM, Defund, the hole shebang is against this gun control bill.

"Politics makes strange bedfellows."

If the antis can send children out to regurgitate talking points about how disarming yourself makes you safer, can't we post up at the same corners with short and sweet literature saying the other point of view? Be the same place they are, and get to the passersby first. Mention things like, "the same people who enabled the spike in street violence and home invasions are now saying the way to be safe is to make sure honest people such as yourselves have no means of self-defense. Police never arrive in time to stop it. Only in time to write a report.

I completely agree. I work with woke lefties and you can definitely reach them this way. Its about how you frame it. Frame the debate in a way that shows how women and blacks, latinos, natives etc. would be negatively effected by these laws. Mention how gun control is racist and Knutson is a wealthy white man who won't be racially profiled by "white cops" under suspicion of breaking these laws but marginalized black & brown POC will. Bring up the rate of attacks on women and mention how self protection is a feminist right and how women should have the right to arm themselves from predatory men, without unnecessary infringements like IP's 17 & 18.

It would be great to get a diverse group (older, younger, black, white latino. straight, gay, women, etc.) to how up to one of their rallies/signature collection events to oppose Knutson & LEVO and show guns rights are for all americans. The gun grabbing democrats benefits from being able to stereotype all gun owners as redneck white guys and they use this to demonize and dismiss us all. But we can use this as an opportunity to prove them wrong and tilt the tide.

IPs have been filed and are now collecting signatures to be included on the 2022 ballot. They seek to do the following:

IP17
-Require you to obtain a permit to acquire a firearm
-Create a firearm and permit database of your personal information maintained by state police
-Ban ammunition magazines over 10 rounds

IP18
-Ban Semi-Autos (includes more than 100 models of handguns, rifles, and shotguns & 10 generalized categories of semi-auto firearms

It never stops....
WE need to fight back. I propose a 'Three Strikes Law' for Oregon. This will stop 2/3s of our crime problem, and make 17 and 18 superfluous. Most crimes committed with guns can be charged as felonies, but the libtard prosecutors let them plea down to a misdemeanor. This should be prevented. Three felonies, you are up for life!!!
