We set off hundreds of fireworks at Port Orchard, WA and watched thousands more being set off by other people. It was great.

People that are anti-fireworks on the 4th of July are either un-patriotic, or have no sense about what the fireworks really mean.

Sure the colors are pretty but the rockets red glare is a reminder.

Stupid nanny state rules should be overturned.

You hit the nail on the head. Behind all the safety nannying, or the cries of noise pollution, or environmental bs you'll find that those who push bans hate the 4th and everything it represents.

Back in the early 80s (82-83?) we were allowed to buy ladyfingers, bottle rockets, and M80s from local stands in Grays Harbor County (it may have been statewide my memory is fuzzy on that one). For almost two weeks the usual suspects were on the tv news or in the newspaper predicting death, doom, and destruction for all on the fourth.

There were no accidents, the amount of fires was average for the holiday weekend, and kids were having fun without having to beg their parents to drive out to the res. Groups like the Lions and Elks made a killing too.

The next year the ban hammer came down and we got the "safe and sane" crap that usually ended up being overpriced duds. Accidents went up, and Indians went back to making a killing again (I'm convinced they are the big backers of these bans btw).

Legalize them all, sell them in town and pass and enforce a July 4th/New Years Eve/Memorial Day only rule for setting them off.
