Hello. I wanted to go camping this weekend (near Detroit Lake) and I wanted to bring along a chainsaw to help me cut some dry trees for firewood.

I was told that this isn't legal.

    My Google-fu has failed me.

Does anyone know any concrete information about what I am and am not allowed to do in these regards?..

You need to contact the Forest Rangers/BLM who are the people who would actually enforce the laws. Anything else is pretty much heresay, which can get you thrown in jail.

You first need to determine the district/area and then start looking for the contact information for that district/area.

For Forest Service, you can start here:

US Forest Service - Pacific Northwest Region

For BLM, you can start here:

    BLM Oregon - Washington

Also better check the fire regulations. Might be a red-flag right now.
