A .22 (especially handgun) in not adequate for coyotes and and for that matter shooting at a moving coyote with any handgun is an impractical idea and will most likely result in wasted ammo flying in unknown directions and the 'yotes scurrying off however if you have a good backstop and this is just coyote deterrence I would have to go along with the idea of a shotgun as well.
