What difference can a lone marksman make? What does it mean to be a force multiplier?

Simo Häyhä December 17, 1905 – April 1, 2002), nicknamed "White Death" by the Red Army, was a Finnish marksman. Using a modified Mosin–Nagant in the Winter War, he has the highest recorded number of confirmed sniper kills – 505 – in any major war.

Just to put that into perspective, a lone rifleman, using a Mosin Nagant ( he used iron sights) became a human weapon, dispatching 505 men in 100 days.

    Class dismissed.

Against soldiers in unfamiliar territory, who were starving to the point of eating their horses, and whose commanders could not pull their heads out long enough to dispatch counter-sniper teams.

Simo was an incredible shot, hit-and-run like a good sniper should, but he was also incredibly lucky.

Paul Revere put 14,000 men in the field on April 19th 1775 without the benefit of the Internet or cell phones. Heck - he didn't even have a land line ;)

One Unmanned, Arial Drone (UAV) with a thermal would have spotted him and could have even laser designated a missle on his possition...

*Class canceled due to tactial ignorance*

Actually they deployed a lot of counter sniper teams. They never made it back.

Class reconvened due to Riot's ignorance.

There were no UAV's or laser guidance systems in use in WWII.

There are simple ways to counteract thermal sensors.

Strategic mistakes are painted with blood. One can't always expect the enemy to be that stupid though.

It seems to me that the OP was making a statement of impact, not necessarily ability. The title of the thread certainly suggests as much.

When you're far from home, freezing so badly that death seems imminent, and unable to locate your enemy to exact revenge, losing an average of 5 countrymen per day for nearly 1/3 of a year is likely to destroy your resolve.

IIRC, he killed quite a few men with a subgun, as well.

    Ha!

Okay dude, I'm very familiar with Simo Häyhä, how he has more confirmed kills than probably anyone in history, his tactics and how he was lucky to survive after being shot in the mouth.

    simo_hayha_second_lieutenant_1940.png

Nevertheless, knowing history does not change the fact that although these tactics may have worked in 1939, they will not work in 2014.

I get the point of this thread, it's that one man could make a difference and that you should always keep fighting tyranny. However, if you think you can get all camoed up and grab your Mosin Nagant to keep tyranny at bay you've got another thing comming. You will be squashed like an ant on a hill, shunned as a terrorist and made as an example for others to "not resist." Hell, they'll even use your actions as an excuse to take more liberties and enforce more laws.

Am I saying you shouldn't resist? Not at all...just saying that there are *other ways* we can fight tyranny without resorting to WWII tactics and end up being nothing more than smoking corpses on the side of a mountain.

Don't forget he held the record for longest distance confirmed kill for near half a century - iirc he made that shot with a M2 50 cal he had a machinists mate convert to single shot and a fabricated scope mount - he used an issue 10x scope for the shot. Those who broke his record in Afghanistan all were using dedicated sniper rifles built specifically for long range shooting. Think what he could have done with the equipment available now...

There is not, nor has there ever been, a weapon or tactic more powerful or impactful than conviction.

We hope...almost everything the military uses is EMP shielded. Even if you think we're going to be fighting some UN arms forces, where do you think they got those gadgets? From us...

A revolution within the US will fail without the support from the local military, which is why we need to be pushing Oath Keepers and Committees of Safety more. Educate the population. Tell people about the Constitution, the 10th Amendment, how any Executive Order is spitting on our Legislative system...that is what is going to win back the United States.
