This is a hell of a story.

Summary:

Underage College Ute (as in, "Da two 'Utes')...of a particular racial persuasion...attempts to both buy (using fake ID) and shoplift two bottles of wine from local bakery that has been in business for 130 years (impressive). The owner's son challenges the kid, the kid assaults the owner's son and runs, dropping the two bottles of wine he had smuggled under his shirt. There's a chase and confrontation and the cops show up to arrest the Ute.

Now the story isn't quite clear on this but my guess is a bunch of people only saw the end of the chase and not the kid shop lifting and dropping the wine. So naturally they accused the shop owners of being racist. rolleyes.gif And this apparently included college professors and deans who subsequently helped organize and lead protests outside the bakery.

The police investigated, and found no evidence of racism. The shop lifting Ute also issued a written statement saying there was no racism and this was all his fault because he shoplifted.

Soooo the bakery was awarded $11 Million from Oberlin College for defamation. :)

It's amazing how badly things can go off the rails when the "mob" comes after you. Imagine running a successful 130 year old business only to have that business all but destroyed or severely damaged over allegations of racism and all that you did was try to stop an underage punk college kid from shoplifting. These are scary times we live in.

Story here..
Ohio Family Bakery Stopped Shoplifter. Protesters Called Them Racist. This Jury Just Awarded The Bakery $11 Million.

A family that has owned and operated an Ohio bakery near Oberlin College since 1885 suffered accusations of racism and protests after stopping a black Oberlin College student from shoplifting. That prompted the Gibson family, which has owned and operated the business since its inception, to sue the college and its interim vice president and dean of students, Meredith Raimondo, asserting that they had defamed the bakery and caused emotional distress.

On Friday, a jury awarded the family $11 million.

And if you follow the links in the story to the article on the actual judgement it says this...
According to our reporter in the Courtroom, the jury awarded $11 million. Here are the details: Allyn W. Gibson was awarded $3 million, David Gibson $5.8 million, Gibson Bros. $2,274,500. Next Tuesday there will be a separate punitive damages hearing which could be a double award (meaning tripling the $11 million to $33 million).

Sometimes there is karma and justice in the world. :)

The students of that school, who are not guilty of anything (except maybe being a little snowflakish, which seems to be a standard thing on college campuses) will pay for this judgement with tuition hikes. And yet again, the guilty parties will snake through on the backs of the innocent(ish)...

After the students confessed, Oberlin still insists the bakery is racist.

SMH

"Well, yes. They did steal stuff and try to break the law on drinking. But why did you have to stop them, racists?"

Everybody likes to jump on the bandwagon when there is something like this. Both sides jump to conclusions before all the facts are known.

Human nature.

Unfortunately, it is getting worse. Some of it is social media, but it is still just human nature.

It just keeps getting better..... LOL!!

Lol!.........college academics often forget that while they may be able to act as God Emperor inside their little kingdoms, the outside world doesn't give two farts about their self righteousness.

Case in point........Reed College's Pancho Savery. A couple years back he went on tour with his "Conversation Project: Guns in America". The summary of the "conversation" was that "Heller vs DC" was wrong and that "Miller" got it right. End of conversation.

First stops on his world tour.........Prineville and Vernonia. :D

The results were predictable. Faced with an audience that wasn't being held hostage for a passing grade, he was called out over and over on his claims. As the event wore on he became more hostile and rude with each passing minute. When the event ended he simply walked to his car and left without so much as an adieu. :D

The stupidity of Oberlin College is staggering!

From a different article, it seems that the attorney for Oberlin sent out a mass emailing a couple days ago explaining just how wrong the jury was in their initial findings.

Who condemns a jury when the jury still hasn't made their final ruling on punitive damages? Clearly Oberlin didn't learn a damn thing through all this.

Not to worry though. To punctuate their initial findings, the jury, today, awarded the maximum amount they could in punitive damages...$22 Million. So that's a total of $33 Million to the bakery that Oberlin has to pay. And the jury also said that Oberlin has to pay attorney fees for the bakery which could add an additional $10 Million to Oberlin's plate.

I just love a happy ending. :)
