This is a hell of a story.
Summary:
Underage College Ute (as in, "Da two 'Utes')...of a particular racial persuasion...attempts to both buy (using fake ID) and shoplift two bottles of wine from local bakery that has been in business for 130 years (impressive). The owner's son challenges the kid, the kid assaults the owner's son and runs, dropping the two bottles of wine he had smuggled under his shirt. There's a chase and confrontation and the cops show up to arrest the Ute.
Now the story isn't quite clear on this but my guess is a bunch of people only saw the end of the chase and not the kid shop lifting and dropping the wine. So naturally they accused the shop owners of being racist. And this apparently included college professors and deans who subsequently helped organize and lead protests outside the bakery.
The police investigated, and found no evidence of racism. The shop lifting Ute also issued a written statement saying there was no racism and this was all his fault because he shoplifted.
Soooo the bakery was awarded $11 Million from Oberlin College for defamation.
It's amazing how badly things can go off the rails when the "mob" comes after you. Imagine running a successful 130 year old business only to have that business all but destroyed or severely damaged over allegations of racism and all that you did was try to stop an underage punk college kid from shoplifting. These are scary times we live in.

And if you follow the links in the story to the article on the actual judgement it says this...
Sometimes there is karma and justice in the world.

Ohio Family Bakery Stopped Shoplifter. Protesters Called Them Racist. This Jury Just Awarded The Bakery $11 Million.
A family that has owned and operated an Ohio bakery near Oberlin College since 1885 suffered accusations of racism and protests after stopping a black Oberlin College student from shoplifting. That prompted the Gibson family, which has owned and operated the business since its inception, to sue the college and its interim vice president and dean of students, Meredith Raimondo, asserting that they had defamed the bakery and caused emotional distress.
On Friday, a jury awarded the family $11 million.
And if you follow the links in the story to the article on the actual judgement it says this...
According to our reporter in the Courtroom, the jury awarded $11 million. Here are the details: Allyn W. Gibson was awarded $3 million, David Gibson $5.8 million, Gibson Bros. $2,274,500. Next Tuesday there will be a separate punitive damages hearing which could be a double award (meaning tripling the $11 million to $33 million).
