I was living in Russia when the Ruble collapsed in 97/98. It was kind of odd. The Ruble was the official currency but no one kept money in banks and most peoples mattresses were literally stuffed with US dollars. No one bought more than a days worth of rubles at a time and almost all businesses took dollars for goods and services.

My buddy that is into currency trading tells me that a lower dollar is needed to prevent the Yuan (Chinese) from becoming the world's reserve currency. I guess that would be bad.
