Last time I flew it did feel REALLY strange having to have nothing for a while. I went from baggage claim to car rental and got into that checked bag before I even started the damn car.

Next time you might buy a small pepper spray after you get there, at the local sport or runners shop. Cheap and easy upgrade to "naked" at the destination.

Just remember to toss it before you go back into the airport

The place we stayed in had bear spray in the little entrance "room " .
