This whole situation is eerie. I just finished watching a really long Korean War documentary yesterday afternoon,
(YouTube - THE KOREAN WAR IN COLOR (01/14) ?????) - [Very good watch]
and heard about this while I was watching, "Friends of Kim."
(YouTube - Friends of Kim - Documentary 1/8) - [Good watch, but disturbing]
I was interested in learning a bit more about North Korea. Ironic, that this happened when it did.

The South was engaged in a training exercise, the North fired upon them. The North's excuse is that they perceived a threat. Garbage.

WOW great finds.Loved the first one, watched the whole thing.OK 90%

Didn't really need to watch all 8 of the second one.Not even the entire first to see all the people that were members, were very anti American and the rest of the foreigners, were lured in to make their propaganda look more legitimate.
Love the Russian who was just against anything American.
And the dutchman who realized he was duped by the tour organizers.

Funny how the Spaniard(president of group) who was dressed very well, was against social classes.
Kinda reminds me of Deon Sanders praising god, with $10,000 of jewelry on and a $5000 suit.
Doesn't add up to me.
All for equality as long as I'm not involved?

And speaking of a "peaceful transition" to a unified Korea
Hence the bombings?

I'm guessing the Group Pres has some big money lying on this.Either getting paid or futures

north korea is just looking for attention by luanching ICBM's, unfortunantly kim jong il might just be crazy enough to actually luanch one that lands in sarah palin's back yard. bad part is that due to "political correctness" the individuals who have been elected into office dont have the balls to do anything about it... BTW is it even possible to actually win the "war on terror"? or do we as the american people just have to continue having our 4th ammendment violated by being groped and analy probed by TSA...

My 2 cents.. Evacuate Seoul and other major cities and threaten the regime in North Korea to step down or face a reprisal that will end the existence of North Korea leadership as we know it, even if many North Korean civilians must be sacrificed. We cannot be bullied by this maniac forever. He is even trying to transport nuclear weapons, missiles to all the hostile Middle Eastern countries, including Iran. It is only time before this madman becomes a nuclear repository for all the world's madmen. Why Pyongyang is still even a standing city is beyond me. Welcome to the politically correct world of idiocy.

One word, China.

One word, China.

– WikiLeaks documents posted on the websites of the Guardian and the New York Times suggest China is losing patience with its long-time ally North Korea, with senior figures in Beijing describing the regime in the North as behaving like a "spoiled child."

The article: Leaked Cables Depict a World Guessing About North Korea

A bit of a guessing game, but, no one knows what someone will do until the chips are on the table...

(and, sorta convieniently timed with all this tension going on...)

ONE, TWO, THEE, FOUR.. HAY!
SOMEBODY ANYBODY START A WAR HAY!

i bet unemployment rates will plummet if there's a draft.

One word, China.

Laconic and incisive as usual, Trismn.

China NEEDS the North to maintain a buffer between US troops and their own. That's unlikely to change. Would we behave any differently if Chinese troops went in to "stabilize" Ciudad Juarez in Mexico?

Many of the major powers of the West looted and burned sacred sites in China as recently as the 19th century. Japan's conquest of Manchuria in the years before WWII was nothing special, just a continuation of a long tradition of many empires' remorseless pillaging of Middle Earth.

What possible reason does China have to 'just trust us' if we were to replace their surrogates (the KPA) with ours (the ROK marines)? They MAY accept an internal collapse of the DPRK, but China will NEVER stand for another assault on the North. They're likely to react the same way as they did in 1950, and for the same reason.

Sorry to let you down here, but China may not have a choice. It's true they may cherish their buffer zone, but if North Korea is going to become hostile and start supplying all the deranged warlords around the world with nuclear weapons, something drastic will be done; even if it means alienating China.

What are you proposing, that China would go to war with the USA? China needs the USA, the USA doesn't need China. The only reason China has succeeded and can consider itself a world power is because it was nurtured off the corporate greed of the USA, as well as its strong consumer base. What China provides is cheap labor and nothing else. Considering that many other countries, like: Vietnam, Bangladesh, Malaysia, etc are rising up and starting to challenge China in the manufacturing realm, means China is starting to lose its niche. China is still a heavily censored society with a mediocre consumer base.

Now, China lacks enough power to start a war with the USA. China would be crushed and slit its own wrist if it decided to supply the North with weapons and support. China won't risk losing all its economic success and position of power in world politics to secure a border.

As far as worrying about the USA as being a threat on the border, I think China has more hostilities with the nuclear-armed India and Russia. There is a great chance that India and China will go to war over border disputes than USA and China.

Sorry, but I cannot agree with your assessment of the situation.

BTW, The Chinese also have long history of looting their own country. They were embarked in feudal and civil wars for generations. One reason Japan was able to penetrate into China so effectively was that, even during WWII, China was fighting another civil war amongst itself that made it vulnerable at the worst of times.

DPRK can barely get their "ICBM" to take off.

The predicted effective range of the model they possess (either chinese or soviet in origin) is ~2400 miles, that's Beijing, Tokyo, Hong Kong, parts of indonesia, maybe India. Japan's already still dealing with an old blood feud with China, they don't really want any more missiles splashing their direction (NK's first missile tests were shot into the Japan/East China Sea, made Japan all kinds of PO'd)

If that Wikileaks thing is any indication, China's already planning on the best world without NoKo, weather it be trade deals with unified Korea (to keep the US south of the minefield) or China itself goes in and cleans house.
Really what's worse: The "Blue's" that buy your stuff and generally leave you alone living on your front porch; or a psychotic son in law beating up guys at the bar then asking for food and ammo, saying they can blow up the world and daring the free world they will?

You'd be surprised, a lot of them change their minds along the way. Try to watch it if you can. The Russian could have been what, 10 years old when the Soviet Union fell? He's just envious, because his parents were probably very strong supporters of the regime. Regardless, it's interesting.

The Dutch guy is still very socialist and very arrogant, but he has more truth than most of them, and can speak his mind because nobody understands Dutch.

There are some VERY interesting surprises in that series, too, that I don't want to steal. Things I have never seen anywhere else. That Spaniard, well... You'll see.

I watched a documentary about an ophthalmologist who visited NK to do a large number of simple eye surgeries on people whose own government cannot supply help for. The people thanked him for the surgeries but poured overwhelming praise on the dear leader, who obviously brought it about.

I was struck with an apparent catch 22, the people were sobbing praises to dear leader, implying that he makes the sun shine and all the birds sing, but I couldn't tell if it was joyful praise or fearful praise. I kept thinking that it looked like people knew that if they said the wrong thing in front of those foreigners cameras they would be killed, and their entire bloodline sent to starvation camps.
The awful alternative was that they actually believed what they were saying. It is nauseating to see people singing praises to a mad communist who is making their lives a living ****.

Recently I also watched a documentary about people who had escaped NK. There was no wool over their eyes!

Just like last time, the world powers will battle it out on somebody else's territory, specifically the same peninsula that was ravaged so recently.

Only this time it will include a whole new info-war flavor, sort of like what happened in Belgrade in 1999!
US bombing of the People's Republic of China embassy in Belgrade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We can't know all the tactics that the PRC would employ, but for sure they won't sit back and passively allow US-backed troops all the way to the Yalu River again. They don't have to win - all China needs to do is prevent the US from winning. Their situation on their Indian and Russian borders makes this test case to the South more critical, not less.

As far as feudal warlords fighting it out, that's why Manchuria fell to the Japanese, and it's a lesson that China relives every time they see their fractious provinces strain at the leash, from Xinjiang to Taiwan. Their absolute territorial integrity is paramount; nothing else matters if China faces - or perceives - risk of invasion from foreign nations with imperial ambitions. Again.

Unofficial sources state that China expects the DPRK to collapse and they expect the unification of the Korea pennisula under ROK control. The sources also stated that China would not object to that as long as US troops stayed below the current DMZ line for any occupation. That doesn't mean that they wouldn't attack us if we ended up at the Yalu river but that they understand that we may have to be there for a short time to finish cleaning house.

Hey, ain't Wikileaks great? Yes, that's where that story originated:
