That does seem a little, uh... off, doesn't it.
Story says the coppers were also investigating an arson at his residence. If he was being targeted for some reason it would explain his diligence.
I work weird hours so it's not uncommon for me to be outside at 0230... having a smoke, watching the neighborhood, enjoying the cool temps or listening to the rain. I don't do it w an AR15 next to me, but If I felt like I was under seige for some reason I would.
There's more to the story for sure, but I can't come up with a scenario where three dudes committing a drive-by are the "good guys".

I'm going to go looking for some follow-up... this happened last year, 5/6/17.

ETA: This story had a minor resurgence in Sept of 17 but without any new information... just people talking about it. I can't find anything newer or enlightening. My Google--fu is weak.
