3 1/2 hrs round trip, 1/2 tank of gas, 24 ounces of coffee, and a bit of exercising some muscles that haven't been used in a while (that some-buck is heavy!), and I'm back home.

Now to start the day as previously planned.

Just to move this project a little further, I bought the lumber. BTW, they are 4x6 x 10' ea (I had posted 4x4).

Now I'll squeeze a little time here and there to get it fixed up.

I see the posts are broken off at 8 1/2 feet, which means there's still 1 1/2 feet underground. I don't see any chain or rope marks on any wood, so I think they must have pushed/pulled and pushed some more to break it. Also no gun shot marks down at the dirt line.

All right, who closed and chained the gate today?

I just got a phone call from a guy named David, who said the green stock gate, on the fork to the lanes, was closed and locked! He found that at 9 AM. On a Monday!

I checked the Blog and there are no closure notices.

I left a VM at ODF in Forest Grove and haven't heard back yet.

I got a call back from ODF. No official closure of any kind. They don't know anything about it. They were out on Sunday and it was open. They are going tomorrow to see if it's still locked and will cut the chain if it is.

Hey Bill. Just got up here and the gate is open. Also looks like they've done some pot hole filling on the main road.

Oh good (on both accounts). Last week, I saw the holes at the gate were same as last year, or two, where it looks like someone dug their tires into the gravel and created some deep ruts. Glad they got that fixed. Hope they got the others up the road.

ODF said they will consider installing a way to lock the gate OPEN, so no one can close it without the key.

So now that I am home: The main road has been done at least as far as the Nofo turnoff. The road up to the lanes was also done and they fixed that real bad spot after lane 2.

There are a coupe of gals that have been stuck up on lane 4 with a broke car for a few days they said, and it very well could be they chained the gate for safety. I did not ask them.

That could be a logical explanation, and a good reason for locking. Thanks for the report.

You'll find the same concerns and conditions at most any dispersed shooting place on public land.

From the safety concerns to the mud issues to the trash left behind, these are all common to public land shooting places.

At least we tried to make a place where shooting could be done in a reasonably safe manner, and at the same time, offer some pretty nice conveniences to the shooter. If everyone would shoot responsibly, it would be perfectly safe (same goes with any other place in the woods).

Yes, it's busy! It is, perhaps, the most popular place to shoot in the Northwest on public lands. And there's no one entity responsible for maintaining it. It's up to us, the users.

We certainly could do more improvements, like gravel on the lanes, build up higher backstops, and perhaps high sidewalls down each lane, but that takes a few thousands of dollars (and seems like there's no interest in raising those dollars). I usually head up the fundraising, but I need help doing it. Otherwise, I'm not so sure I want to do it all alone anymore. It's a lot of work!

So, like any other dispersed shooting place, we're constantly trying to keep up with the trash. Even that is a 'no interest ' thing with most people.

This place is public. It's ours. We are the ones who use it and are supposed to take care of it. If we don't, ODF won't be interested in helping us put in other places like it.

I hope those of you who use it will chip in to help maintain it. There won't be another large group cleanup till next spring. We'll need people to do what they can as they recreate.

Thank you @Cogs

My schedule opened up for this weekend and I'm planning to go reinstall the Kiosk sign at lane 3 this Friday, Oct 20th about 8 or 9 AM. Anyone care to help?

I'm renting a towable 1 man auger with a pilot bit and 8" bit. Should be a piece of cake. The whole kiosk will be assembled and we'll need to lift it out of the truck and set into the holes. It's rather heavy and I'd rather not try to do that myself!

If anyone is there to shoot, I'll give them a couple trash bags to use while we install the sign.
