Got my official factory Zastava M72 in today. Really got it for the bipod assy which I may or may not keep with the gun. Havent decided yet. For anyone not in the know, those things have been unobtanium for decades. Having one on a simple cut up parts kit adds at least 1500 beans to it.
Lets start with whats not good then work our way up.
First impressions? Do better Zastava. I'm your biggest booster but come on guys. Make it easier for me. It's brutal out there . Im trying to convince people your stuff doesn't suck. Help me! I'm a bit handicapped by the fact Ive owned several Mitchell guns over the years and that is the level of fit and finish I expect. Like it matters to you.

- The finish. Even recent imports had a decent-ish mill finish before bluing. This M72 looks like it was coarse sandblasted before bluing and I know what that looks like.
- The wood. OK, this is on the importer. They get guns in without wood from Serbia because they cant use the original furniture because of 922r but come on man. I know you have some sort of inferiority complex where you think you aren't a pretty girl and you like to Goth it up to hide your ugliness but you aren't. You are beautiful. Put some good looking , weapon appropriate wood on there. The old blonde Yugo Elm was gorgeous. People even called it Teak back in the day . It wasn't but it was bright and clean. Knock it off with the black stain for Christs sake. The M76 Buttstock? Why? Its an M72. I wouldn't say this stuff is going in the garbage. I'll find a home but its not staying on the gun.
- The front sights canted, I think. I haven't got out the bore sight yet but I have a good eye for that sort of thing. Not crying cuz I can fix that but do better.
- One of the bipod rivets is falling out. I can fix that but again. I shouldn't have to.
- The rail. M72's dont really have rails. Mitchells did but they were different than these rails. I know Zastava is kind of boutique and builds to a customers specs and this is on the importer but it leaves the receiver with no place to put a sling loop so it has to go on the buttstock where it doesn't belong.
- The one time I want a muzzle nut they put a slant brake on it.
- The cleaning rod is an M70 rod. Way too short.
- The pistol grip. Horrid sanding gouges. I mean really bad.
- The bipod. One leg rivet needs restaked but its a genuine M72 QD bipod. I once offered to give my left nut for one and now I dont have to.
- Its propery headspaced. I checked.
- The receiver riveting is good.
- The gas block is timed correctly.
- The front sight is off a smidge but they actually put the flip up night sight on it.
- I know its not correct for a M72 but they used the M70 cover latch. I love those things.
- The barrel . Thats a genuine Chromed Hammer forged barrel that is better than anything you'll find in any parts kit or NOS parts bin ( good luck ) or from any aftermarket supplier.
