Hi everyone,

I'm a new transplant to the PNW from central TX. I grew up hunting everything I could there and did a stint in the Army, so I'm no stranger to firearms. Looking to find out more about hunting in the area(it looks harder here, more elevation!), and good rifle ranges around. Look forward to learning from y'all!

Gosh man, welcome to the beautiful Northwest. I'm not a hunter, so I can't help you there. I'm also terribly sorry that you had to come to PDX at this time. Unless you left a community of snowflakes and socialists?

Allow this forum to be your sounding board and place to go if you need some good 'ol boy conversation!

Welcome aboard !
So in regards to terrain, the state is divided into the western 1/3 and eastern 2/3.
The Cascade Mt. Range creates a "rain shadow" which makes the eastern 2/3 drier than the West side.
It breaks up the Pacific storms.
The east side has the Ponderosa forest (me likey), sage country and Juniper country.
There is some Savannah which has scrub oaks and meadows.
Parts of the East side will remind you of Texas.

The West side features the Douglas Fir forest which is the tree that built the nation.
Excellent structural lumber comes from Doug Fir.
The West side has a thick understory and is essentially a Northern jungle (rain forest) in some places.
I would rather hunt on the East side because it is more open.

Good Luck

Yeah the brush arrrg! I grew up hunting in the Intermountian West, where you would spot your game by glassing, plan your stalk to the other side of the canyon, spend three hours in said stalk, close to as close as you can get (preferably within a few hundred yards or less) , then take your shot .

Here in the west side you hear the blacktail and elk laughing at you from 10 yards away but there is a ten foot high mass of Himalayan Blackberry between you. Then they just walk off ... drives me nutz!

But it's still great to be out hunting, regardless.

Welcome.
