A "head-up" (HUD) digital speedometer. Only a gimmick, I used to think; "just because it can be done, doesn't necessarily make it a good thing to do."

Then I got old and came to realize that my on-board speedometer is not located within the focal range(s) of my bifocal eyeglasses; plus, that display is way down there in the shadowy recesses of the dash panel and 80 year-old pupils seem slow to adjust from daylight to dark. For safety's sake, checking speed really needs to be a heckuva lot faster than it's been taking me lately.

As an experiment, I bought an inexpensive HUD speedometer off ebay. Works off GPS signals, so it's more accurate than my on-board speedometer. Now my speed appears near the bottom edge of my windshield so I don't have to take my eyes off the road.

(In the photo below, I used a low camera angle to make it apparent that the readout is projected to transparent plastic film on the windshield. From the driver's viewpoint, it's not at all obstructive since nothing but the vehicle's hood appears "behind" the projection.)

Interesting. Does it plug into cigarette lighter or did you run wire behind the dash so that the wire is not visible?

I'm lo-fi. Meaning less tech is more.

Bukowski was quoted to have said, "i write with a typewriter. If it were to break, I would use a pen. If there were no pen, I would use the quill."
I gathered but if you interject what you don't do in every circumstance it's the opposite of efficient or helpful.

My GPS speedometer came with a small diameter cable long enough to reach the Aux DC socket when routed to the passenger side. It conceals neatly in the space between the windshield and dashboard, then under trim & weatherstripping beside the dash, and finally through the space behind the glove compartment.
