What are you wanting to use it for? That would have a big impact on my answer....

A few I'd suggest for your requirements and price range -
    Ruger Gunsight Scout
    Savage 10 Series
An AR chambered in 308/ 7.62
    Mossberg MVP in 308

You could always find a reasonable, used Remington 700, drop it into a aftermarket stock and spend the remainder on a nice scope. Good optics cost a lot, more than your rifle.

The New Ruger SR-762 would fit the bill, except for the price... $2,000

Maybe a Mosin? Cheap, Cheap Ammo, Good deer rifle, OK for target shooting...

    Nawwwww!! Get the 762!

Remington R25. I think MSRP is about $1600. You'd still need a scope though
