I think your first premise only partially covers the motive for increased gun sales. That would apply generally to semi-auto rifles and handguns, standard cap mags, etc.

However, I think that most of the increase in gun sales of the last few years can be attributed to publicity of crime increase, the riots/unrest, and defund the police efforts. Many anti-gunners have now come to understand that the police are not only not required by law to protect them, but they can't. Even if they do manage to get thru on 911, nobody is coming to the rescue. They are responsible for their own defense. Or not, their choice.

The broader meaning as far as what effect the increase in firearms will have politically is unforseeable. We can project trends, but will likely be wrong about any change in how people vote or who they vote for. Changing minds comes slowly, over long periods of time. We didn't get here in 10yrs and we won't get out of this situation in 10yrs. IMO there will always be a fight for hearts and minds. We can especially thank politicians and the media talking heads for this.

That's funny considering the people clamoring for socialism are inevitably the same people who help bring about totalitarianism in any of its forms.
