Mostly its all knowing your rig, and having good tires on. I always put on studless snow tires on the wife's rig, it makes her happy, we know how women can get. As for me, on the coast we get that slick as snot ice, that has zero traction. And my Toyota pu has BFG tractions, and what I do, is air my tires down. If I don't, I'm all over the road. The stretch of road I drive is rough, and has lots of bridges. But if drop my psi down to 15 psi front and rear, I have all the traction I ever need. Steering gets a little squirrely at 50+mph. But it manageable.

When I used to work at Les Schwab tires, when we installed snow tires, we would drop the psi a little. It helped the softer snow tires grip the road better.

I would look into a tire that has alot of Sipping to the tread. The more sipping the better the wet/snow/ice traction.
