Are there any dealers or 'smiths in the Salem area who are considered experts and can verify originality and condition of my 1943 Remington Rand?

Thanks for the link. The first thing I see is that it is actually a 1944, based on a serial number of 1998xxx.

The oily looking spots on the front portion of the slide, is the results from Remington Rand using molten lead to anneal the slides metal to prevent cracks in weak areas.
