The NRA stayed out of it for the most part. The KRRC is not one of the clubs here that requires NRA membership. I think the NRA offered to submit an amicus brief, but that was about it. They might have offered to do or did other stuff, but I have no idea what it may have been.

Based on the limited info - it sounds like the NRA was taking care of itself and not carring about private clubs. Way to go NRA.

50BMG is tough on rifle ranges. It will punch thru most baffles and it will damage things to a greater extent than a regular rifle. I shoot mine on private property that has several miles of downrange with no homes in the area. It also has more than 150' of vertical elevation change behind it so that for the most part everything but an intentional upward shot will impact dirt. It only takes one shot into a home or car to shut the place down and whip the anti-gun socialists into a feeding frenzy.

The problem with the range is neighbors. You can baffle and fire safely at 200yds. Disturbing the neighbors could be a problem. Getting the Fudds to relax is tougher. Most gun club Fudds, know little or nothing about guns and only approve of their 30-06 or a shotgun.

As far as the KRRC problem, the board members caused it. The club president is operating a "for profit" business on club property, using club equipment and phones in his "for profit" business and has changed the way the club operates. This will no doubt come down as a monster tax bill at somepoint. All of that smarty militia talk won't slow the IRS down one bit.

My understanding from shooting there is that the club president and his gun toting range officer illegally record (audio and video)members on the range to monitor those members that do not like him and his flunkies. Audio recording is illegal in Washington state without consent.

I do not doubt one of the gun toting range goons threatened the county when they came to inspect all of the very illegal construction work being done. I shot a pistol match there a couple of years ago. As we were loading up, the range goon came out and started screaming at "non-members" to leave the property now or get arrested. He had his hand on his gun and was twitching for a fight. He looked completely unstable and outraged.

I found it a bit odd to say the least. I paid $80.00 to shoot there, the match had ended less than 20 minutes before and we had to score, pull targets and clear the line. Then after hauling my gear to the car, I had to load up like everyone else, we could not simply fling things into the truck and roar off as if we had a nearby fire to put out.

My impression is their is an unsavory element of tacti-cool wannabes infesting the club.

lonegunman,

Your experience is nothing like what I have seen at the KRRC. What did the club say when you complained about the "range goon" that offended you?

Audio and video surveillance of a person in Washington State is entirely legal as long as they (all parties) know it is happening. The cameras are not hidden and the monitor is right behind the desk for all to see in the range office. The club says the cameras are there for security reasons and to monitor after hours range safety. It is also now required by the WA court to monitor for safety by County officials. What evidence do you have that illegal recording is being performed at the KRRC? If you have any, then I'm sure you are not the only one and the Kitsap County Prosecuting Attorney would have been all over that and brought criminal charges of his own. Sounds like you might be making a serious accusation, got evidence to back it up?

None of the neighbors I am aware of never really complained about the business (NFI) operated there other than the excessive (they claim) noise it generated. The KRRC has expanded in the last ten years, but this was mostly from the County's demands that it open up to the public after the club was allowed to buy the property it had been on since 1926.

The expansion has been on the original active acreage in the form of pistol bays that allow action shooting away from the shooting bench and making the 200 yard line as wide as the rest of the rifle line; a real plus in my opinion. As far as I know there was little noise added from shooters brought in by NFI to shoot at the range. Many more people shoot at the KRRC due to the population increase and the club being required to open to the public. As Kitsap County keeps clamping down on the areas where people are allowed to shoot, more of them go to the KRRC to shoot.

The irony is that the County does not want people shooting on their own land and does not want them shooting at the KRRC either. If we wanted to be oppressed like they are in southern California, we would move there. :)
