It's reported that for the last couple of weeks mysterious drones have been prowling the skies above NJ nightly. They are large and noisy and have navigation lights, so they are not trying to be stealthy. The object in the video sounds like a jet aircraft to me, but some reports indicate they can hover (something like VTOL maybe?). They have also been spotted in other locations around the country, but most activity appears to be in NJ. Where they come from and where they go is under investigation.

Do they even own guns in NJ?
Yeah, but they've all had the serial numbers filed off and the grips wrapped with rubber bands.

….annnndddd….Just like those Chinese balloons, Nobody seems to be in a hurry to shoot one down and solve the mystery?
Odd 🤔
Nobody is in a hurry to be charged with a crime.

As concerning as it might be IF they are being flown legally then there is not much that can be done.

If NOT then they should be tracked back to point of origin or somehow safely 'downed' so it can be determined exactly how and why they are being used.

I am thinking however with as loud as they can be heard, and seen and described they ARE in fact below the minimum altitude they can fly and therefore ARE in violation of the rules.

The FAA only extended protection to drones because they didn't want people trying to shoot them down. As much as I believe we should have a right to down ANY drone, I do agree letting people try to shoot down drones is a very bad idea.

Be cool to come up with a safe alternative though....

There's a lot of rules. If it's over a pound, the operator has to be registered with the FAA. There's max flying altitudes, and a drone license is required if you for it above people or commercially. You're also supposed to have a radio operator license as part of the drone license. As with all things, trust but verify. I haven't looked in a hot minute.

A higher flying drone dropping a net?

OR as I have mentioned before a paintball gun with some kind of gummy substance (heck maybe maple syrup) to gum up the props and motors.
Well, we better not postulate to many theorems here, don't want to get the wrong kind of attention.

Not just NJ

This one says "Russian" but also says they have not actually been identified

One story said that one of the drones was tracked by a NJ State Police helicopter, but there was no info on what the outcome was.

These things are big, some say the size of a car. Kind of makes me wonder how they know for sure they are drones.

The comments are interesting. Particularly this one, purportedly from one of the pilots of the commercial aircraft:

"The object descended vertically in 15kts of wind. Was the size of a small car. It hovered perfectly stationary a few feet off the ground.ATC sent out an Ops vehicle. As the vehicle approached the object it took off vertically."

"Mysterious drones have now been spotted in New York City flying over Staten Island this week, the borough's president said Thursday.

The drone sightings – similar to the ones in New Jersey in recent weeks – were reported above Howland Hook Marine Terminal and the West Shore on Staten Island as recently as Tuesday, according to Borough President Vito Fossella."
