I can speak with some authority on "mean veterans". Put simply, it's (generally) grief. Some learn to put it behind them, some compartmentalize it, some become consumed with it, some become broken by it, and some just lash out at the whole world.

If all they ever did was just be "mean", then count your blessings... my WWII veteran grandfather was truly evil and did horrific things (along with some of his buddies) to his own step-daughters (my aunts) over the course of many years, and when my dad passes away I'm going to burn every photo of him and WWII memorabilia that was his.... he will be erased and utterly forgotten.

We are but human... how fragile we are.
