A true, close friendship is such a precious thing. I am sorry for your loss, but am glad you were able to have such a friend. And these sort of things are a reminder of how little time we have on this blue marble.

That's pretty funny as the "lampshade" is indeed a cedar hat.
Dave taught at Lummi Nation School and the Lummi's traditionally made hats and many other items out of cedar....
