A rare earth magnet to help identify the fake silver bars people try to pass off as being better than cash.
Buy your silver from reputable sources. Don't buy them on Ebay. I don't have a lot, just a few hundred pounds, but even a few ounces can make a difference in being able to barter for additional Viagra, etc.

As a Prep.
For this coming week, I was thinking to maby pre cut and paint to house color some ply wood to cover my windows with for times of civil unrest. Perhaps with the long horizontal + patern cut out , ( for shooting thru ), and reinforced along the back inside with glued and stapled on strips of lath.

Good idea to at least have the ply on hand in the event of a natural disaster which could shatter windows. Here, earthquake for the most part is the concern. High winds downing limbs & such thru windows. Etc maybe. Hurricanes, at least not a concern in our region.

If the concern is dirt bag people, and avoiding some type of "routine/expected" home invasion incursion in civil unrest, loss of rule of law? Not much boarding up windows is going to do.

Course it would depend on the property & if the folks can have enough live security to keep the dirtbag people away from the home 24/7.

So as an addition to multilayer? May help.

IMO.

The biggest gap in preparation I see, and I'm in this camp, is building a community support/defense network. No one can survive as a lone wolf, there is no way a regular family can secure a typical suburban or semi-rural house alone. A coordinated neighborhood defensive system is going to make the bad actors move to easier targets - don't be the easy target.

Liquor.

Survival can be pretty damn boring most of the time (in between bursts of stressful situations).

Nice to have something to take the edge off here and there.

Keeping current on expiration dates.. from meds to aspirin.. and making certain all that stuff is watertight. Batteries.. dates..!!! Food, water, expirations and such. Is that surplus nylon or polyester tarp you stashed still good or has it rotted out on the folded seams from old age (seen it)? Most of the fails I have seen and experienced is not checking and keeping up on prepper stuff. Found Top Ramen in a truck bug out bag six years after expiration. Probably still good... but for six more years..?
Check exactly how things degrade. Many meds will degrade and lose effectiveness over time but will not become poisonous. Then again, some do become real bad to take if they've broken down. The more you know!

Ramen can last damn near indefinitely. Make sure to get just the noodles (not the ones with veggies or meats), and place them in an airtight package with silica gel. Literally zero moisture will keep mold and bacteria from growing. If it looks alright, smells alright, feels alright, and doesn't have any foreign growths (like mold), it's good.

For most foods, expiration dates are just suggestions.

Clorox / chlorine bleach.
Super useful - only lasts about 6 months sealed up.

I'm still rotating 10 year old MRE's though... No problem there. :)

Wife has me planned to do this very thing this week.

Why would you punish yourself like that? I am way older than you and eat donuts, candy, drink sugary soda, plenty of red meat, gravy and sleep a lot. When I'm dead, I don't want people standing next t the box saying" He looks so natural." I want them to say he looks awful, no wonder he's dead!
I'll start.
"Gunny, I can't believe you've lived this long. Must be the preservatives in the Twinkies and antibiotics in your meat." :D:D:D
