Mossberg 500/590 Question

I'm curious if anyone has ever had the plastic trigger guard on a Mossberg 500 or 590 fail?

Garand Thumb released a great video on the 590A1..which has a metal trigger guard and slightly thicker barrel. I'm not gonna be slamming my barrel on any heavy bulkhead doors anytime soon, so I'm wondering how the trigger guard is..which is the only other difference between it and the 590.

I've googled the same thing, couldn't find any actual failures. Think about all of the plastic fantastics out there.

I'm pretty sure you can replace it with a metal one, either aftermarket or older OEM

I looked into it last year and the metal guards were almost as much as the shotgun. I'm thinking it's an upgrade I really don't 'need'. Want maybe..but not need.

I'm surprised a cop would even touch a Mossberg..back in my younger days they swore by Rem 870's.

We ran 590's for YEARS in the Military, never once had any sort of failure with any of them, and that's saying a lot! Ours were flat out abused in every way one could abuse one, they flat out ran!

We also ran the Remmy 870's and also had zero issues with any of them, same level of use/abuse, same results!

It comes down to choice, BOTH are bomb proof, reliable, and they flat out run! Personally, I have no issue with ether, but PREFER the Mossy's tang safety over the Remmy's Trigger bow button which isn't ambidextrous. other then that, I prefer the Remmy's slightly better field serviceability and fewer parts count that can be removed, and I do like how smooth the Remmy runs, which isn't a dig against the Mossy at all, just personal preference and experience with both!


You couldn't pay me enough to run a Benelli or Beretta, PERIOD, having ran them both, they are JUNK compared to the Mossy and Remmy, and I make no bones about it ether! I know many will get their rudder's hard bent about the two above named shotgats, but I don't care at all!

My cheap 500 is 30+ years old and had survived thousands of rounds with out any failures. It's been severely mistreated at times and doesn't look pristine anymore, but still works great.

12+ million 500/590s produced thus far, and hardley a complaint. That says something!

The 870 can be setup to be ambidextrous, I'm left handed and by using a pistol grip stock (I'm using a Speedfeed IV) along with a Vang Comp dome safety allows me disengage the safety by swiping it with my thumb similar to a 1911 and re-engaging it with a straightened trigger finger. And I agree, I like the smoothness of a nice broken in 870. While my 1301 sees more use these day I can't see getting rid of my 870P.

The two of the only semiautomatic shotguns worth owning imo. I'm pretty happy with my 1301T.

If you're worried about a plastic trigger guard on a 500, you should upgrade to a 590 understanding that there will be more overall weight to that shotgun.

You also may need to reconsider how rough you are on a shotgun to break that part.

Plastic defects and returns to shape better than aluminum. Somewhere on the internet there is a test for Pmags and aluminum GI mags. One survived, one failed.

M590 only has a metal trigger guard because mil.spec requires it....the 500 plastic trigger guard never failed in use.

They used to be somewhat affordable. Last time I looked the metal trigger guards were basically unobtanium.
