Stopped by H&K gun shop in forest grove today on the way to the forestry center.

Picked up a mosin for $70. Hex receiver 1944 SA stamp so I think its a Finnish 91/30. Sound right?
missing the sites so Im going to be replacing them.

Saw a very nice looking Mauser come in while I was there. Sorry I forgot the details.

I didnt get a picture but I was introduced to a very nice looking Springfield Krag of 1895 I believe, all original that he had for sale. . Mighty nice as well.

Anyone have suggestions on where to look for parts?

I definitely ID'd the rifle as a Finnish m91 (found the tiny hidden import mark)

So Im looking for some original sights for it. This is what the rear site should look like

so far I found one on ebay that would need to be shipped from Finland for as much as I paid for the rifle, but it would be nice to have a little more reliable place to purchase in the US

Tried the usual mosin parts places.

Gunpartscorp has the leaflet but not the base

Im having equal trouble finding the front site as well

I still cant find the front site base for a Finnish m91. Im contemplating trying to make one with my dremel. I dont think I'll be able to make a good dovetail that way though.

I did get a Brass stacker front sight mount that will work. Just doesnt look original.

The M39 rear sight base fits well except that the stock would need to be modified to work.

still have no idea why the prior owner would remove the sites and not replace them with anything. Weird.

I read somewhere that the dovetail for the rear sight on Mosins can be made to function as a base using .22 style rings to mount a scope. How well that works I could not say.

The Finnish M91 does not have a dovetail on the barrel making my search for a rear sight more difficult. They are soldered on (I think) on this slightly flattened area. Same with the front sight. No pin holes or any other way to attach it.

If anything, it sure has been interesting learning about all these variations over time.

I was going to comment on the rimfire rail as well, but dang.

Getting an original part for such a rare gun is going to be a real challenge. I would consider contacting the seller from Finland and asking if they can help cut you a deal, since there will be so much work to do with it.

$70 is an amazing price! Especially from a shop! Is there more wrong than just the sites? I was thinking about getting one of those guns with rotten rifling and relining it, just as a project since it is so cheap to learn on these Mosins.

It functions fine just missing the sight. the barrel looks good. I got a good deal because without the sights he was just keeping it for parts.

I got a rear lower sight base coming from Estonia right now. I have the upper leaf here already. I have a front sight on the way from Liberty Tree but I cant find a base. So I might try and make my own. Im not using original Finnish barrel bands. Found some for $50 but Im just doing this for fun and that's way more than I would spend. So Im using some m91 Russian ones.

Assuming I dont botch up the silver solder to get the sights on it should at least look pretty original.

Looks like that reciever is an early cossak reciever. Look under the rear tang for a date. Normally the cossak marks were drilled or buttoned away. Sometimes liberty tree collectors has Finn parts that come. The rear site should still be dove tailed. At least mine are in similar rifles. They are not pinned like later model 91/30s. I have one missing a reat site like that so I'm curious where you found a base. Good on you for the score.

Here is one rear site though was more than I wanted to spend.

But another popped up in Estonia, just the base and spring, that I ordered. And I got the leaf from
<broken link removed>

the barrel on mine only has a slightly flat spot where the rear sight sites. there is no dove tail or pin holes. You can see on the very top of this pic
