I've owned a few dogs over the years that were chipped. As I understand that technology, an animal shelter would scan incoming dogs. If a chip was found, the ID was retrieved and some remote service was queried where the dog owner's contact info was matched.
In the case of dogs, there's not some giant war room with a big screen showing blinking green dots for each golden retriever in the country. It's much more analogous to a UPC barcode than beacon of any sort.
So if there was a barcode-like ID chip, which required direct proximity to be read, does that change anyone's feelings?
