That is a good read. Don't bother with first website and the horrible hard to read white print on black back ground. It amazes me people still set a web page up that way.

Go right to the army document for a much easier read.

What the second give Americans as an overwhelming advantage.
Never lose it Never give it up !

One experienced sniper is capable of doing what will prove to be beyond the capability of a tank, gun, or entire infantry subunit: disable a commander, destroy a gun or mortar crew, control one or two streets . . . and, most important, instill in the enemy a feeling of constant danger, nervousness, and expectation of a sudden shot. Everyone fears the Chechen snipers in Grozny. . . . There are many cases where a sniper wounds a serviceman, and then kills the wounded person and those who come to his aid.20

Great read. Although I have to wonder what impact our current technology would have in negating defensive advantages if a modern city was forced into the same situation.

Brings back some very-fond memories....like presenting the 13 hour blocks of instruction at Camp Darby.

Although I used to "spit" (to verbally present) M-TETT in place a METT-T to compel (civilian term for force) the analysts to view the terrain from a broader perspective; particularly the enemy's.....

Midway down that home page is a reprint of this article, "The Battle of Grozny: Deadly Classroom for Urban Combat - By Timothy Thomas, Lt Col"

Definitely worth the time to read.

Here is the original on US Army Stationery:

Good read...you think after Afghanistan they would have realized that the local populous has the advantage...they know the terrain and their will to defend their home is greater than your will to try to take it from them. Add that to the fact that the defender always has the advantage and you have a recipe for disaster!

Another thing about the indigenous people: they're still there after your forces have gone home, unless you nuke and pave the entire area. And they won't be in a forgiving mood after so many of their own have been buried.
First battle of Grozny: 1994-1995
Second battle of Grozny: 1999-2000
Beslan school siege: September 2004.
It's not over until the locals decide it is.
