That should help. 8ball, thanks for digging, and Randy, I appreciate you fighting the good fight--the problem I have is that rural Dems, who I might otherwise be able to support, invariably support urban Dems for committee chairs, and it's the chairs and leadership who decide what bills get to a vote and which don't.

Randy, have you considered simply pointing out that the UK and Canada do not have the same SBR restrictions as the US, and allow ownership of SBRs without additional hoop-jumping beyond what is necessary to own any other rifle. In these two example countries, SBRs are not seen as a particular threat.

I have made it a point to never compare USA laws to the laws in other countries when discussing gun control with politicians. In the case of Canada and the UK, their laws are much more restrictive overall than ours.

Ranb

True, but the process for owning a rifle in Canada is less restrictive than in some US states, and in that case Canada treats SBRs (as defined by US law) the same as all other rifles.

Some more data:

California DoJ reports from 2009-2012 on firearms used in the commission of crimes

2009 - 1 (0.7 percent) were classified as a short-barreled shotgun or rifle.
2010 - None
2011 - 3 (2.5 percent) were classified as a short barreled shotgun or rifle
2012 - 1 one (0.7 percent) was classified as a short barreled shotgun or rifle.

Of course, none of these were legal because SBR's are not legal in CA.

sorry 1/28/14 hearing starts at 1;30 in Judiciary. Get folks to sign in in support especially law enforcement. Please let Randy and others lead the testimony.

Judiciary* - 1/28/2014 1:30 p.m.

House Full Committee
House Hearing Rm A
John L. O'Brien Building
Olympia, WA

Public Hearing:

HI 591 - Protect our gun rights. (If measure is referred to committee.)
HI 594 - Gun sales background check. (If measure is referred to committee.)
HB 1561 - Concerning short-barreled rifles.

Finding the John L. O'Brien BLDG at the Capital Campus is easy. Take the 14th Avenue SE exit from I-5 and drive west, follow the signs until you see the Capital Dome. I park out in the street to the east of the Campus, be careful not to get a parking ticket.

Show up early to sign in and ask to speak. No need to dress fancy; clean neat clothes with a suitable shave and haircut are all you need. If you speak, don't say anything you can't prove unless you make it clear it is only your opinion. One of the worst things a person can do it get emotional about an inanimate object (guns). Be short, sweet and to the point. The first few people to speak might say everything that you wanted to bring up, that is okay. It happened to me at the silencer use bill hearing when Brian Wurst spoke.

Randy, I was looking forward to speaking, unfortunately I am going to be in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia on Tuesday.

It's good that all three bills are on the same day, because there will be a much better turnout from our side.

As far as I can tell there was only about a dozen people that signed the sheet for HB 1561. The first sheet had about seven signatures on it (all pro) and then disappeared. I asked one of the staff where it was and she put out a new one which got a few more entries, again all pro.

The support for this bill by the people of WA sucks in comparison to that on either side of the bkgd check initiatives.

I don't see HB 1561 on the agenda for an executive hearing yet. If it is scheduled for an executive hearing, then is should be recommend for passage. Then it is on to the Rules Committee where it should be place on the calendar for a vote on the House floor, then on to the Senate where this starts all over again.

Randy and all other supporters,
Thank you all for your tireless work in this arena. It is tough to fight the naysayers on our own side sometimes but what is needed is to be on the offensive ALL the time and Randy is doing that. Thank's Randy and hope to see you at KRRC soon.
-Pete

Six people signed in for SB 5956, all pro and none against. Three of us spoke and we were not rushed by the chairman at all. You can see the video here; http://www.tvw.org/index.php?option=com_tvwplayer&eventID=2014010167 Senator Hatfield's opening statement was mostly like Blake's at the House hearing. Padden has to get this bill an executive hearing and recommend it for passage prior to 2/7 so it can go to the Rules Committee. It has until 2/18 to pass the Senate and go to the House.
