Used compression length?
For instance, the spring force for a full sized 1911 is measured when the spring is compressed to 1.625 inch. A Commander when compressed to 1.125 inch, an Officer's model 0.825 inch (if memory serves).

Every semi-auto has this criteria set by the design engineers.

Knowing this allows one to better tune the recoil characteristics of the gun and aids in the proper selection of spring when shooting very light or heavier than standard loads. This can reduce slide battering thus improving the lifespan of the gun (not to mention making recoil more manageable) and ensure reliability.

Otherwise it's trial and error in either swapping springs or pulling out the dykes and clipping coils.
