I open carry a handgun a lot, mostly because it's more convenient to not have to cover up when I go to town. Of course, I live in Lewis County, WA, so...no big deal.

Carrying an AR for self defense purposes, short of the zombie apocalypse, is just show boating, IMO...sure, it's legal, but so is my wearing short short cut offs....you won't see me doing either of these things. Common sense would dictate that one would get me laughed at and the other would just be showing off. You figure which is which...

" Are you saying I should compromise my right because of other peoples irrational feelings?"

Nicely done.

It seems that he is saying there is a better way to approach the problem.

The basic problem with open carry is that it predictably scares people who are not familiar with firearms. All it takes is one phone call and then the guy with the gun (handgun or long gun) gets to waste his time interacting with the police. Some officers know the law and can be really good about it. That said, there are others who either don't know the law or intend to be awful. Playing this game is like playing Russian roulette.

It is understandable that the open carry proponents want to get people accustomed to firearms. The problem is their confrontational method is counterproductive. We need to familiarize people with firearms without scaring them with firearms. Think about how we've already done it with people we know.

Many of us have taken non-shooting friends and family members to the range for their first time. It's a safe bet a lot of people here have seen that ear to ear grin their guests get when the day on the range ends. They're excited about their experience. It was fun. This is what normalizes firearms for people. -Seeing some dude walking around with his rifle and a chest rig does not educate non-gun people. It panics them and that harms our cause. Scaring the masses so that they can be easily manipulated by the anti-gun crowd is the opposite of what we need to do.

We should be holding many events and getting more people involved in shooting sports. Honestly, it's a campaign that's going to take years. However, the more people who have a positive, firsthand experience with firearms, the more people who will be comfortable with firearms. This is the way to get people into our camp.

Given the insane A-holes running around doing sick stuff, I don't think it irrational for the general population to be alarmed at a "guy" walking down the street strapped with an AR and a shoulder bag that looks like it may hold extra ammo and to call the cops to see if all is well.

The cops showed, found all was well, mentioned that he should expect to get police contact while in that posture and went their way. No rights were violated, and making sure there wasn't some POed schmoe with an AR running around is perfectly legit.

I have more than a few times thought about walking down a certain street in my town strapped with one of my AR's or AK's as there are some MS13 wanna-be's living there (that are so blatant they even tagged their own house with gangster signs to let everyone know what they are) and let them know they don't "own" the streets. I'd be within my rights, and it'd be legal, but not the smartest thing one could do.

It all sounds good in a movie script, but I figure if the "time" does come I'll let 'em know the hard way, by total surprise as they get cut in half while "in the act".

He has tons of videos all throughout oregon. Marked guardian is his youtube channel. His name is Warren he lives down in medford. I understand what he is doing but, whatever.

Whether his tactics do or do not have a negative effect on firearms;

Do you know what has the worst effect on our firearm rights? Inactivity. NWFA is full of it.

It is stunts like this that will get open carry banned in Oregon.
I have lived here 11 years and I have yet to see anyone open carry except on TV. Even though I know it is legal, if you walk down my street with a rifle, you will be in my sights. I have no way of knowing if you are just exercising your rights or if you intend to do harm. My wife and son's safety trump you misguided display of your rights.

As a local from McMinnville, He can not even pronounce it right!! I am very proud of our finest officers. They did everything just right. The point the cops made were right on. He is just a fool. I had heard of this guy before, first time watching his video. He is hurting the cause, just like that kokesh "fool" with his "dc" shotgun stunt!

Sorry, but the guy in this video is an ***...

He's not looking to do anything but get attention. Why else would he videotape and post it on YouTube? None of his rights were violated, so why post the video? All the officers said was that with the school shootings, people are a bit nervous. He says it's trying to normalize it. That's kind of like teaching them to swim by dropping them in the middle of a lake. It might work, but more than likely is going to cause more problems than it will solve.

So your answer is to hide your passions for firearms and the second amendment like some sort of secret shame? To cower and cater to the will of the socialist agenda?

This same issue has been on this forum countless times.
All those in favor of open carry versus those who may or may not have the stones to stand up for their god given rights.

Let it be known, we're finding ourselves pushed back more and more into a corner because we didn't have the courage to do something in the first place.
Now our very rights are on the line, and even still we are divided within our own community because most seem to be appeasers rather than patriots.

Id rather side with that guy you called an "A**" than a coward any day.

Idiots in CA were unloaded open carrying at Starbucks to 'exercise' their rights. (Only legal way to OC in CA then) Not too long after that it was banned, and made it almost impossible to UOC or LOC in places you once were able to without a CCW, (CA for CHL) like out in the bush in the high sierras.

We have the right to OC a longarm or handgun in most areas in this state. Let's keep it that way. One guaranteed way to loose it is by the actions of *** clowns like this guy and others with the same mindset. Exercising this right in this way, in this day and age only does harm.

I want my son to be able to OC when he is of age and responsible enough to do so when camping, backpacking, fishing, etc. Please don't try and get into a dick measuring contest with police and lawmakers and screw it up for the rest of us with this type of childish BS.

Well.. on one hand, jackwagons like this guy ARE "normalizing" OCing.. a few years ago, OCing an AR would have resulted in guns drawn in a lot of areas that'll now almost ignore it. Getting the cops irritated enough that they don't even want to waste time on it is a good thing, I guess...?

That doesn't make a lick of sense.
"Lets not OC so we'll be able to OC"
Or
"I choose not to OC so my children and grandchildren can OC"...
A right not exercised or exercised often enough isn't a right and soon is perceived as such.

How could he exercise his rights AND not draw attention?

I exercise my rights and somehow don't have any video confrontations with police on youtube.

I exercise the right to eat ice cream, carry a gun, look at pretty girls, buy sandpaper, etc.

I have a right to carry a gun. That's a good thing.

I have a right to have sex. That's a good thing.

I have a right to bubblegum my friend's wife. That's not a good thing to do.

I have a right to open carry an AR15 in McMinville. That's not a good thing to do.

See the whole thing about rights and proper uses of 'em?

Do I want to see the right to bubblegum my friend's wife taken away? No... I'm pretty much against laws in general, at least while we have so damn many of them already. And so long as people don't go crazy with bubbleguming their friends wives, there won't be the perception of a "problem" that causes people to WANT to make laws.

"Use it or lose it" is incorrect. It's more like "Abuse it, expect to lose it."

Thank you.

I am beginning to understand why only 56 men put their lives on the line !

It's just the wrong argument.

Cops -SHOULD- respond and see what's going on. They should use their eyes and see that the guy carrying a rifle isn't doing a damn thing. It is not a violation of privacy for them to watch someone who is OCing.

I'm a Christian, I try not to judge and I try to live my life in humility and to serve my neighbors and community (note - I'm trying! :)). That being said, the Westboro Church Bigots, Gay "pride" parades, the Portland naked bike ride, and guys like this all are in the same category; none of what those idiots (I'm trying!) do is going to change the mind of anyone in the opposite camp or who might be on the fence and is probably is doing more harm for their "cause" than anything else.
You're either secure in who and what you believe in or you're not. Parading around, filming your confrontation with the police is NOT about exercising your rights. Frankly, he comes off as a little **itch (I'm trying!) that is trying to right a wrong that happened to him in his youth. Exercising your rights means being politically active, a responsible civic operator, and being ready to OC that rifle when it counts. You will not find a more sober-minded, purposeful, steadfast supporter of RTKBA than me. I made innumerable phone calls, sent personal letters, and donate to NRA, OFF and to the Colorado recall efforts. I have the opportunity to attend a lot of firearms related training, including carbine and long gun; generally what I have found is that Joe Q public carrying a high power rifle scares the bat**** out of me. That being said our inalienable rights come with an equal dose of responsibility - You want to affect the outcome? Take someone shooting and exercise that right responsibly.

To preserve or gain rights, you have to exercise them and test the boundaries.

Just how far would women, gays, blacks, and others have progressed if they didn't do a little "in your face" exercise of rights they (had or wanted)?

Things like: Pride parades, gays openly kissing in public, mixed-race couples actually holding hands, women burning bras, blacks actually sitting in the front of the bus..... etc....

All of these seemed "outrageous" at one time, and yet these groups are gaining ground rather than losing it. We should follow their lead on how to exercise/keep/gain rights.

Yes, and don't forget the Black Panthers open carrying shotguns on the steps of the California Capitol. That worked out really well, didn't it?
