While you were writing your diatribe, I and a bunch of old timers spruced-up Kelly Creek Elementary School. Last weekend, Powell Valley Elementary School. Next weekend, Dexter McCarty Middle School. Saturday 9am-noon. We bring our own tools. Hot dog bbq lunch afterwards.
A woman getting her exercise on the school play field was muttering "how wasteful, spreading bark dust on the running path when schools need funding." I said to her "Our labor is donated, and we paid for the 30 cubic yards of bark."

And then straight back to getting personal, name calling, pigeon-holing, and stereotyping (I'm sure the woman must have been a Liberal right)? How dare she mutter her opinion about such things! Perhaps if those schools knew how you truly reacted to such situations, they might feel differently about letting you on the premises. But then it is much harder to be as brave and as honest in public as it is behind the anonymity of the internet. Don't give it, if you can't take it. That is all.

Armed security hasn't been effective because they aren't on the scene until the harm's been done. Victims are the real first responders.

I get annoyed at the "what might happen" if teachers are armed. What WILL happen if they are not armed is that kids and teachers will be killed. I prefer to deal with real facts rather than fantasy.

Most schools have a barricade plan that would work fine with an armed staff as the students are down and out of the line of fire so there is no "what if".

Like I've said before...

1985, when I was a kid: live .45 rounds, with no delivery platform = a hit at Show & Tell.
Today: even a spent cartridge, no launcher = immediate expulsion and criminal charges.

Around 86 or 87, I brought an entires suitcase of fireworks, including illegal stuff (bottle rockets, firecrackers, Roman candles, etc) to school for a speech I did on how they worked. Best speech I ever did in high school, and had no issue bringing them into class or having them in my locker.

Reply: Any individual, who is responsible for others, should have Basic Life Saving Skills. Period, end of sentence. In every Company I have worked for, there has always been ~Ome sort of Emergency Response Team, in place. I would say, without carefully looking at my Forty Plus years of work history, that I have been on those teams, at least fifty petcent of the time, Due to my back ground in that topic, Including One School District, and one where Iwas Lead Safety Officer, compliant with Cal-Osha regulations, I was the go to man for issuing first aid equipment, and certifying repirators, for use in Toxic Air Environments.

And no, US schools do not currently delivery 100% of anything. US schools are underfunded, and the curriculum is designed to get students through graduation, which looks good on paper, rather than providing education.

If your ~POV~ is schools are underfunded, why is it that Private schools that receive No $$$ from the dotGOV, can and do provide Better Education, for Less Dollars/Student ??? It is because of several aspects, all related to One concept.

The National Educators Association, (Teachers Unions) demand "tenure systems" when a teacher is tenured, there is almost always a drop in productive teaching, and Because private school teachers are seldom tenured, they have the financial motivation to TEACH BETTER, or look for New Work!!!

The NEA/TU all demand time which is used for Non-Student teaching time, a waste of Teacher time, that is Rampant and unregulated in many States, if not ~All States~ equals More waste.

Public school systems always are Staff heavy, in the Administration portion of a scool district, and within that, Administrator's are funded at a loss to teaching dollars.

The school district I once worked at, retired a Superintendent. They replaced that One man, with Two, at almost a 300% price of the retiree. As part of the Classified Union, we worked Four years, to fire one half of that team, along with the TU, then we got the new Supt down the road, and our interim Supt ?

the same retiree... Got it all running smooth again: BTW: he had Always been a Supt/Teacher, and that has stayed the same since, for Twenty Years... Small Town School Districts pay Supt/Admin way to much, for not enough work.

Your answer to that seems to be either "add more guns" or "scrap public education." My students got 100% of my attention, empathy and commitment. Veterans who should be able to see the dangers of putting under trained armed personnel in high risk situations where the lives of children are involved, and Old men who should know better get nothing.

We Pay you, to be the Guardians of our Children, while you are teaching them, they are in Your Custody, hence I correctly use the term guard, care for, protect.

I do not ask, for any one to carry a Gun, to protect the children they teach, but I ask this:

Please do not disparage or prevent by union contract, any Teacher or School Employee who would be willing to do so !!!
As a Custodian, I would have been willing to arm myself and carry concealed, that school now has a hired School Guard, paid money to ~just~ be ready, I would say, pay a custodian/teacher to teach, and Give them 1/10th what a school guard would be paid, they Are Already, Ready!!!!

To finish this off, and I know this is a lengthy post...

To repair our school's ability to Teach, I advocate:

A. each citizens Educational Tax Dollars, be available for their use, in sending their Children WHERE they want them.
B. de-govermentalize school districts, restructure Administration so it is not top heavy, but Teacher Resource Heavy.
C. Remove Mandatory TU, etc. the $$$ teachers pay Into TU, would create a higher wage!
D. Remove Tenure Contractual Agreements, and replace with Performence Evaluation Rewards!

Yes those are Radical ideas, but they are also All Consevative View Points.... I rest my case.
