Shocking i know.I thought this expensive system was supposed to bring portland into the future of safe and clean transportation but the gangbangers have struck again and robbed a woman of her purse tonight on max at 9pm.

shots were fired at a good samaritan trying to help her....6 shots but no hits.
maybe if the gangbangers would hold the gun upright and use the sites they might hit something.

I dont wish this on anyone but if it has to happen I do hope it was an anti gun liberal
so she can see why we carry concealed.

dont give the ghetto rats any pointers on how to use their guns, they do enough harm as is. it is too bad the cops cant just pick up all known gangbangers and drop them in a pit somewhere and let them have at each other!

MAX has never been safe... Ever.

I have the honor of being one of the first people assaulted by a group on the Overpass for the Hollywood stop. 3 in the afteroon, They didn't want my money, just apparently wanted to open my scalp and leave. Blue and Grey, probably Grant Jocks, All I saw after that was stars.

At 10 years old I was just a rag doll, unfortunately I was also already taller than many adults. Wheee 1986.

A few bad apples doing bad things on one of the nations best mass transit systems does not make the MAX a bad thing any more than a few bad apples with guns doing bad things makes the 2nd amendment a bad idea. I am surprised at the reactionary nature of some of the attitudes here.

Trimet is a very good transit system (wish they would quit raising the fares but thats a different story) There are good and bad people everywhere and i seriously doubt that the amount of crime committed on Trimet is anymore in volume than the amount of crime committed away from Trimet property. If you ride the MAX or bus system just be prepared and stay alert, Much the same way as reasonable people stay prepared and alert at a gas station while refilling your car/truck.

What the heck does LIBERAL have to do with it, and why must every thing some people say on this forum have to come down to RIGHT or LEFT......I'm gonna' have to start calling BS on this kind of stuff every time i see it!

This is the perfect scenario for the "Anti Gun Crowd", this is just one more reason in their little minds to GET RID of hand guns, and/or put MORE regulation/fees/hoops to jump through, on LEGAL gun owners. Like THAT would stop such occurances!

I take MAX on occaison, but am always armed and exercise situational awareness. The thugs look for people who are vulnerable or just lost in their own world and not paying attention. I haven't had any problems on the train itself, but have seen a couple of folks size me up on a MAX platform or in a parking lot. I just give them a direct look (I don't try to stare them down) to let them know "Yeah, I see you." and they disengage after that.

Max is a complete joke. It cannot justify itself on any kind of a cost analysis. It can only operate by keeping an open connection to the bank accounts of tax payers. And it is a conduit for crime.
Ask the Clackamas county Sheriff how much crime has increased as a direct result of the train arriving.
Not against public transportation all together, (though private business would probably kick its arse) but a bus makes so much more sense than these multi-million dollar tax black holes.
Numbers of busses and routes can be modified based on ridership. They can also run on clean alternative fuels.
you cannot add Trains to the lines or provide any express lines etc....

Hey Einstein...that is how mass transit works. Do you think the highways pay for themselves? They actually cost more money than the mass transit system. As for comparing the cost to buses, you might not like what you find because MAX moves more people per dollar than the buses do. Plus they do not disrupt traffic flow as much as buses and they do not cause wear on the roadways so they save money that way too.

PS: I would love to have the Sheriff show some factual evidence of increased crime and it's link to the MAX...because when that topic was covered at the town hall meeting two years ago there was none to be found.

Wow, imagine, you resorting to insults? I am shocked.
Yes, I am aware of 'spreading the cost around'. I have lived in or near this socialist burg for most of my life. Take away the funding by people and business who do not use nor benefit from the choo choo train and it sinks into oblivian.
    Roads cost more? prove it.
I can easily support my position. Next time ridership drops in one part of town lets see the re-route a train to follow the people. Or if ridership increases, lets see them add a train? Cant happen.

Here's one for you....Note, TriMet does not consider any 'crime' that does not actually happen on a train or a bus their responsibility. So when they count mass transit related crime numbers they are fibbing.

Wow, you are completely ignorant of the subject. That is not an insult, just an observation. Why in the world can trains not be added and subtracted? They do it all the time to cope with lighter and heavier traffic. So you premise is dead on arrival. Buses are more expensive than light rail in the long run. That is a proven statistic. Light rail attracts more riders than buses. That is a fact. Light rail attracts riders from a much broader socioeconomic range than buses. That is a fact. All of the information can be discussed at any of the dozens of community meetings that were held every time a new line is proposed. How many did you attend? Where are you getting your information?

Also, calling the highway system socialist and trying to pretend that is a bad thing is so ridiculous. This "socialist" system of communities banding together to provide services to the masses that they could not afford to build through private means is the reason the USA has the standing in the world that it has enjoyed for so many decades. People that want to decry such acts under the guise of patriotism are either fools or have ulterior motives.

As for the crime increase, the city has done study after study and shown no relationship between light rail and crime so that sheriff can put up or shut up. I am betting he would shut up. All the studies have shown is that predator crimes might shift towards the higher population near light rail but it does not in crease nor is it directly related to the light rail. The crime rate does not increase at any higher rate than it does with simple population increases. Unfortunately some people are not bright enough to make that distinction. It is funny how he is citing crime rates (unsubstantiated as they are) without addressing the fact that population has also increased at a similar rate in the area as well as patronage to the local businesses. Clackamas mall used to be the lowest grossing Mall in the greater portland area. now it is flourishing. With more people comes more petty crime. Whether they got there by car, train, bus, boat, or on foot. So when a person makes stupid arguments with loose associations like this they are really saying "we don't want more people here because that increases crime." whether they realize that or not.

MAX is dangerous. It is well known and we see media reports all the time about beatings, muggings, and god knows what else. The problem is that it does attract criminals and it allows them more access to the rest of the city, so while crime may not increase in the city as a whole, it does increase in certain areas that may not have had as much crime before. I would bet that if someone, other than the city, did a study relating to crime within two blocks of the MAX, I would bet you would find that is was proportionally higher than in other areas. I'm not advocating we get rid of it, but they need to make some changes to make it safer.

In a world full of choices, it amazes me that those who beef so stridently about their living conditions continue to CHOOSE to to live there! Oregon is a mighty big place, and those of us who CHOSE to live elsewhere in the state chuckle in bemused amazement at those complaining about Portland, yet can't seem able to get the heck out of there.
