new to me mauser relative hand me down here is the kicker,
the problem is the receiver is still marked 7.92
the person who had it passed away and no one knows what caliber it is,
with micrometers the throat is around .284" meaning it is perhaps chambered for
7mm-08 Remington, 7x57 Mauser, .280 Remington, 7mm Mag.
so any one in the Springfield area know a gunsmith that could making a chamber casting
so I can know what it is?

Otherwise known as the 8MM Mauser. Roughly equal to 30-06 in power.
I take my thank you in a Cabela's gift card.

:)

7.92×57mm Mauser. The 7.92×57mm Mauser (designated as the 8mm Mauser or 8×57mm by the SAAMI and 8 × 57 IS by the C.I.P.) is a rimless bottlenecked rifle cartridge. ... In its day, the7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge was one of the world's most popular military cartridges.

How old is the rifle?

Older bores - VERY RARE, but may still be found out there as sporters - are .318". MAY be found marked 'J'.

Post-1905 bores are .323". MAY be marked 'S' or 'JS'.

Never seen a Yugo-made 7.92x57 that was NOT .323".

YMMD.

8mm mauser
Bullet diameter 8.22 mm 0.324 in
as I said micrometers the throat is around 0.284
you want to pay how much? for the ER visit for shooting a 8mm bullet through a 7mm bore?
Send the bill (for the chamber cast) to the unscrupulous gunsmith that re-barreled without proper cartridge markings.

I'm still open to the Cabela's gift card idea.

8X57 Mauser... 7.92 as receiver marked. However, a lot of bring backs were chamber reamed for 8mm/06, as there was no 8mm Mauser ammo available in the states until well after WWII. Have a smith slug your barrel and cast the chamber.

Seeing as I seem to be one of the persons here with a full set of the SAAMI documents, I'd like to offer the relevant page...

I had a customer take my last bit of cerrosafe, but I'm sure I could order some more and find some time, as long as you aren't pressed for time. I am also a teacher, and th school year is just getting ramped up.

Something's amiss here.
I missed the ".284 throat" thingie amidst all the gobbly-goop about possible chamberings in the first post.
From the information given, it sounds like we might have an original 7.92 Mauser that has been re-barreled with some flavor of 7mm.
Apparently the barrel is unmarked.
