Can anyone shed some light as to the date of mfg on a Marlin lever gun Ser 440781? I have looked at all sources on line with no luck.

1944 NOT! I saw something stating the first two digits would id year of mfg., next it was first 2000 less the first two digits =1966 which is also incorrect as that year had a letter prefix- j.

Above is my futile attempt at help, sorry for the confusion.

Are there any letters stamped before the number digits? Are you certain this firearm isn't a store brand Marlin like a Wards, etc?

No sir, no prefix, and no store brands identified. Steel butt plate.

I'm guessing it's older than I'm used to seeing.

Caliber, bbl length and style would narrow it down a little

30.30 short (really), carbine style, no saddle ring, tang peep (could be added). barrel band has provision for sling, but nothing on rear of stock. Nice wood.
