NEWBERG, OR (KPTV) -
A man accused of stealing a hammer from Walmart in Woodburn and using it to steal guns from Fred Meyer in Newberg is behind bars in a Washington jail.

Police were called out to the Newberg Fred Meyer store the night of June 18 after an employee discovered guns had been stolen.

Investigators said 22 handguns were taken from a locked display case. The suspect broke into the case using a hammer he had stolen from Walmart in Woodburn, according to police.

Officers said the man got away with the guns in a backpack that he also stole from Fred Meyer.

The Newberg-Dundee Police Department released a surveillance image of the suspect, as well as a photo of a similar backpack.

The makes, models and serial numbers of the stolen guns were entered into national law enforcement databases.

Three days after the thefts in Newberg, an officer in Mount Vernon, WA attempted to stop a suspect wanted on outstanding warrants.

Police said Mark Reyna drove away, eventually stopped his car and attempted to run from the officer. A K-9 tracked down Reyna, but investigators said he attacked the police dog.

He's also accused of resisting arrest against additional assisting officers and once he was finally taken into custody, police said he had to be sedated by a medical crew.

While processing his car for evidence, officers found a handgun under the seat. It was discovered to be a gun reported stolen by the Newberg-Dundee Police Department.

Officers in Mount Vernon compared the surveillance image from the Fred Meyer burglary and identified the suspect as Reyna.

In the following days, search warrants were served in connection to Reyna's arrest and six additional guns stolen from Fred Meyer in Newberg were recovered.

Earlier this month, the Skagit County prosecutor issued charges including attempting to elude police and possession of a stolen firearm. According to the Skagit County Jail, Reyna also faces a long list of additional charges, including theft, resisting arrest and assault.

Police said a federal arrest warrant and hold have also been issued for Reyna.

Two others were arrested as part of the investigation, accused of processing stolen guns and other evidence related to the Fred Meyer thefts.

Police said the information about Reyna's arrest was not released earlier "to protect the safety of the Mount Vernon Police Officers, and ATF agents, while they were actively tracking down leads, writing search warrants, and recovering stolen property."

Because Reyna was booked in a Washington jail, a booking photo was not available for him.

Good to know they got this idiot. As I recall previously, they said he'd grabbed a hammer from the tool section at Freddy's. Now they're saying he actually stole the hammer from Walmart, to steal the guns at Freddy's? Good grief. This guy is all kinds of stupid. I'm just happy he's off the street and they've recovered at least some of those guns. No knowing how many he may have passed on to criminals. Maybe we'll find out some of his 'buddies' were given guns as 'gifts' and will end up arrested themselves for possession of stolen guns.
