Pistol Brace Under Fire After Dayton Shooting

While pistol braces and AR pistols have been good for the industry, Betts's cowardly actions in the Dayton shooting potentially put them in the crosshairs of gun control advocates. The gun was "modified in essence to function like a rifle" and "to avoid any legal prohibitions," - Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl.

"The federal restrictions on short-barreled rifles were enacted to stop people from making rifles, guns fired from the shoulder, more concealable," yahoo.com surmised. "Rifles typically can fire more powerful cartridges than pistols and shoulder stocks allow the rifles to be fired more accurately."

"Enter the pistol brace, also known as a stabilizing brace". "For all practical purposes, this device allows pistols with short barrels to have something resembling a shoulder stock."

So why weren't gun control advocates going after pistol braces prior to the Dayton shooting? They most likely didn't even know the devices existed. To them, all they saw was an "assault-style" weapon that looked like all of the others they were already after. They didn't understand the differences and legalities surrounding AR pistol. This says more about the anti-2A crowd, which seems to yell about banning guns before doing any type of research. Historically, that has been the case, where gun control advocates can't accurately defend what they're fighting for.

Mark this report as an early salvo fired for regulation or potentially a BATFE reversal on the pistol brace ruling. Rifles and magazine capacities will still likely take the brunt of criticism. Hopefully pistol braces won't fall victim in the same way bump stock did following Las Vegas.

The media analyzes whatever was used in a given shooting and wants to ban it. As your article says, the bump stock was essentially unknown to most of the regular populous. That's why they're so scary. Both bump stocks and now pistol braces above are cast (by police chiefs, and then the media amplifies it all) as workarounds, hatched in underground caves for one purpose: EVIL. It's not a difficult leap for the ignorant media, along with ignorant sheep that believe them as well as opportunistic politicians to draw the conclusion that "if only they were banned, <insert tragedy> could (nay, probably would!) have been avoided! We gotta get these guns off the streets! Don't forget, they're just lyin' around, easier for a child to get than a book! Anything else you hear is just the evil gun lobby and gun manufacturers who will lose $billions!"

Roger that!

So let's keep bringing them up so everyone is completely aware.

Maybe we should also keep writing the BATF about legal uses while we are at it.

Absolutely. We should rally and all open carry nothing but AR pistols with braces slung at low ready.

Don't forget ghost guns...
Ex-con who killed California cop used homemade 'ghost gun' :s0001:

how bout they ban alcohol and cocaine? wasnt that used by the shooter too?

Whoa hey how dare you suggest a form of escape that actually statistically kills more people in a year than guns do get banned vs a plastic stabilizing device thats only been in use from the recent century.

Then again who was it that tried to ban alcohol originally and ended up making a lot of people angry way back when in the US history...

If you want to win against their propaganda, you need to get started now. Don't wait until the election. NOW. Join commenter status on newspaper websites. See all those posts by readers? Jump in. Make good clear concise points. Keep copies of the good ones, and make copies of other good posts that you can reword and repost somewhere. The antis' strategy is to surround the readers with one and only one opinion. You need to get more correct material in front of those same readers.

Have friends who believe the hype? Have conversations.

I have changed the minds of a few. It can be done. It helps to be friendly, listen to where they are coming from. Really listen, don't just look for a good interruption point. Hear and understand the points they are making. When they KNOW you are hearing them and respect what they say, they are more inclined to listen to and respect what you say. Make clear points. No long rants about black helicopters. Know some real facts that you can prove, and be willing/able to prove them. You can't expect 100% success, but it will be better than 0.

When you have conversed for a while, offer to teach your friend to shoot. Your gun, your ammo, take them to the range, free lunch included. Teach the safety rules before you get to the range. On the drive or at lunch before you go. State each rule, and explain it. Make them repeat the rules back to you so you know they know. They just learned that "this gun nut" isn't some Yahoo who shoots in the air. You care about safety.

When you get to the range, start with a .22. No hand cannons that will hurt or scare them. .22. They will hit what they aim at and be proud of their accomplishment. That may be enough for the day. If they want to try something bigger, use a 9mm or a little smaller.

If they want to learn with rifles, use the same strategy. Small first. Leave the .300 WinMag at home.

THE WHOLE POINT IS THAT THEY HAVE A WIN. When they leave the range with you that day, they have a smile on their face, and they have lost fear of guns.
