The "duty to retreat" must be a legal stipulation, because it damn sure isn't a moral one.
Self defense, by it's very nature explains that your life/limb/family has been endangered, and at that point one needs to be able to take the action necessary to preserve one's life. Retreating may simply mean you are shot in the back before your wallet/keys etc. is taken.
