Well the stars aligned and my wife will be getting her carry permit for WA and OR as soon as we can get the funds to do it.

What did it finally take???

She and some friends are going to a timeshare in OR in the fall and she has told me a couple times and I've just said ok.

She then asked me this weekend why I hadn't said much about her trip. I told her it was fine with me but if I had anything to do with it that I wanted her armed and to have her permits.

A bit surprising to me, she immediately agreed.

It's not that she is anti-gun but she can't carry to work and otherwise, most of the time, she is with me and not in high risk areas so she leaves it too me.

So between recent events and my single request I will have a spouse with a carry permit and that means she will have to train with one gun more often so I guess my range time will increase as well:cool:.

It's been a verrry long road to get her here and before I get a bunch of opinions in the devils advocate range - Yes, she will pull the trigger if she is in danger. So no this was not forced on her.

Good to hear!

Still a work in progress with my wife. When we met she would ask questions like "That's not registered? " ... "No honey...". "Why would you keep it loaded?" And I say "The intruders/murderers aren't going to politely wait for you." We have made huge strides and she's getting closer to wanting a permit.

Now she's concerned with us defending ourselves in public and the cops shooting the wrong people, i.e. us.

Thankfully my wife approves of me opening the door after 8pm with one hand and my .45 in my other hand behind the door etc.

My daughter is unfortunately very left sided and thinks I'm paranoid but my wife was the one to beat me to the punch and explain why it is appropriate and reasonable.

I'll get my daughter there maybe someday - maybe not....

Thanks for the support everyone.

Great to hear!!! Reminds me of my wife...

We married 28 years ago and when we first lived together I purchased a gun. She said we won't be keeping that gun in this house. I looked at her and said that it's my job to protect my family and how I choose to protect you and our future children is 100% up to me... Thankfully she understood.

For that daughter, you just need to put things in perspective. There's a story about a capitalist dad and socialist college aged daughter. Dad asks about how her best friend is doing, only to understand the friend is struggling and might not graduate on time. Dad suggests the daughter transfer some of her grades to the friend, so they can graduate together. At which the daughter protests, "I worked hard for those grades, I'm not giving them away"

See, we're all really on the right when the sacrifice becomes personalized

Congrats! My wife is starting to come around. She was talking with her friend about taking the online class together. So hopefully soon.

Awesome! I consider myself very fortunate to have a wife that loves the 2nd Amendment, loves to shoot, and wants her conceal carry permit. I'm getting her in a training class very soon.

You can get online training for the Oregon requirements.

I know a class is better for some people ( ability to ask questions etc)
And, you can find a Utah class - that class will work for OR, and that permit will cover other potential trips too.
(not that WA is all that limiting)

Then you need to find some training for how she'll carry. Ie Off body - in a purse - is different than on-body in say an appendix holster.

This is not an expensive undertaking, but if you need a few $$ to make it happen, I am sure there are a few of us round here who can help.

Thanks man, that's a very generous offer.

When I took my Utah class (years ago and then never filed it) they said that WA residents have to also get an OR license but OR residents were covered for WA by the Utah. I could be wrong though.

Odds of us traveling outside OR and WA in the next 5 years is slim so I was thinking about trying the online class for her - she hears me talking about self defense and guns all of the time. She is also receptive to instruction from me so I'd rather be able to see the information the online class gives her and supplement it with what she and I would do together in a given situation.

She hangs onto her purse like it's glued too her so I'd assume that purse carry would be the way she would carry - least amount of change to start would be my goal for her.

We have a trip planed up too the range on the 3rd with another couple so she will get to try the 2 pistols I have now and can pick the one that suits her till we can think about getting her one that is her choice.

Then another range trip a month later with 2 of her lady friends. After that I'll be able to get her out into the woods and we can run some drills till she is comfortable.

Good points to bring up, it's appreciated.

Oregon, being special, does not recognize any other states permit. However, they do recognize the training required by Utah, and accept that for the Oregon permit. (And possibly other states.)

There are a few threads around which say that Multnomah county is not a bad choice for getting a permit.
I haven't heard about Columbia county (St. Helens)

FANTASTIC!!!!
Some times it just takes a while. My Wife got a permit when we were dating since I took her to do it. For years would not carry. Did not shoot much. After over 15 years she just started to take to it. Makes you feel so much better when they will start to see the light so to speak. Glad to hear your's is there now.

My wife was somewhere in between on her comfort level with guns. She didn't feel she was under much threat back then. With much urging, she took an all-female 12 hour safety course when we lived on Kodiak Island, which put on by a couple of great instructors. Loved it and brought home her big smile and targets every night. She's had a CPL about 10 yrs now and regularly carries.
