Hunting mostly but would like to try service matches or heavy iron 3 gun

How bad is the barrel?

Visibly pitted. If you fire a round the case expands into the pits hard enough you have to use a .25" steel rod down the barrel and hammer it out.

Q : Are you intending to keep it in .30-06 or change it to some other caliber (say perhaps .308W)?

Thought about .350 Whelan but then no service matches... So staying 30-06
