Airport Security: Loaded Gun Slips Past TSA Screeners - ABC News

TSA the biggest waste of money ever! Keeping the honest people honest.
I went through the airport and they harassed me over a sealed plastic water bottle but let the drunk obnoxious guy behind me through carrying a skate board without any delay (skateboards can be used very effectively as weapon, ask any skater.) A number of years ago when my now deceased father was traveling to a funeral back east recovering from surgery on his legs which had painful diabetic neuropathy (79 year old veteran of WWII and Korea) and he could barely walk, they made him take his shoes off which took about 20 minutes, it was very demeaning and painful for someone who was clearly no threat. They don't train TSA agents to identify terrorists because that would be profiling and would be wrong in the PC world we now live in. They don't care about what works. They pay them very little at this boring mind numbing job and they only do what they are told, rather than train them to think and identify threats. Ironically you don't even have to bring weapons through security you can buy all kinds of improvised weapons from the gift shops once you are through the screening area. For example the made in Oregon store sells bottles of wine, perfect for clubbing someone over the head or cutting them with the broken end once the bottle breaks. Billions of tax dollars and I know I don't feel any safer.

I used to travel a lot for work and just last year a female business partner of mine was shocked when she realized she accidentally forgot, and brought a can of mace on the plane in her purse. No alarms went off, no-one stopped her.

I hate flying these days. Plus I have such a common last name that I am always pulled aside for a search. I've been told by TSA that there is probably someone on the do not fly list with a very similar name.

Who knows, most tsa agents seem annoyed at their jobs anyway.

I've packed lighters onto the plane. My coworkers put them in my laptop case without ne knowing

But oh my a gun. Nevahhhhhhh

Analyzing the x-rays of the bags as they whiz by is harder than it looks. Guns don't always look like guns, depending on what else is packed on top of them. Holding a slightly-questionable bag for a hand search is a hard call when the line of people waiting is long and angry.

I went through the two days of testing for the earliest selections for the screener job in Portland. I scored so high that they actually examined the test equipment to make sure that I had not cheated! But the whole scene was run like a hurry-up moral boot camp by ex-military junior lieutenants. They were urgently trying to send me to work immediately in Eugene---without any training---even though I applied for Portland.

I told them that I was no longer interested in the job........................elsullo

No excuse for this. Don't you feel safe!

Copy that - until a year or two ago I was ALWAYS "randomly" selected for additional search - an old neighbor was a TSA training manager - apparently the theory was that if someone was going to obtain legitimate ID under a fake name they would be more likely to use a common name in case the fake identity name was linked to a crime or warrant - it would be much easier to explain away a warrant for a Mike Smith or David Jones as being someone else than to try to explain that the warrant wasn't for an Niles Kristavich. I remember a guy that was on the same 2 flights with me going to Kauai had the same problem and had been "randomly" searched at 4 connections so far. When we got to Honolulu he hopped a cab to the porn district and bought some sex toys and a tube of lube - lubed up all the toys and put em in his carry on. He just about died laughing when they opened it up and began searching - quickly closing the bag and changing gloves... He said the added bonus was that he was on his honeymoon...

Now that is funny. :s0114: :s0112: :s0114:

I've been looking for work since August, and its depressing how little the screeners make, as opposed to 'analysts' and other desk jockey TSA jobs. Its like half the pay for being the frontline against 'terrorism.' How priorities are set I'll never know.

Threats, or bogus threats get through the screening process approximately 4% of the time. And as stated above, these threats can be very difficult to see in the screening machinery, depending on which type of machine is used and what the threat is, as some hi-light certain threats better than others, and vice versa.. Screeners only look at the screen for a half hour at a time and rotate. Keep in mind alsok that the screening at the checkpoints is only one part of a multi level security/screening process that most are not aware of.

Why did this guy go to the news and tell them HE BROKE A LAW! I remember this happening in 2003 after the TSA was formed and a guy tried taking many things through security, he wrote and book on it and served jail time for breaking laws. I can't find the link to this right now but remember seeing it on the news.

In 2006 my wife and I were travelling a short flight, so we cleaned out one of the BOB's and totally forgot about a compartment. We found ourselves behind security with OC Spray, fingernail clippers, a fillet knife, pocket knive, and a razor knife.

We talked long and hard about it and decided the best thing to do was shut our mouths and complete our flight. People are human, things get missed, but in the end profiling, profiling, profiling, that's what's going to work.

a couple years ago i took the middle school kids from my church to mexico. on the way home from mexico after we got off the plane i looked at one of the kids back packs and there was a survival knife tied right to the backpack, i asked him about it and he didnt even know it was there it was his camping back pack, so we went through two airports security with know problem with a knife in plain sight

I just remembered when I was going through the airport in Lima, Peru - the xray machine was broken and I walked through the metal detector with a video camera and it wasn't working either. On the flip side if they decided to search you security was carrying a good assortment of weapons - mostly AKSU-74s, FALs, or UZIs with a few G3s etc. I'm guessing that it wouldn't be all that friendly if they caught you with something getting on the plane either.

we flew into Mexico City. While being checked through my wife's luggage was thoroughly searched. No problems. BUT the armed guards wanted to see what was in my fanny pack. As I opened it a $5 bill flew out as well as my pocket knife. I grabbed the money in mid air and they looked the knife over and let me onto the plane with it. I had the knife to cut the twine we tied around the luggage. Boy, was I sweating that until I was out of the plane! We did have a nice cruise through the Panama Canal and the Caribbean after that though.
