This is his facebook page:

http://www.facebook.com/PDXMayor.charlie.hales

He has a post near the top about his plans to disarm law abiding citizens and betray his oath to uphold the constitution.

Let him know how wrong he is!!!

You will have to send him a friend request. If he accepts use it as an opportunity to post your opinion on his stupid ideas about gun control.

There is going to be a demonstration in Salem targeting state government:

Charlie has no legal power to do anything with gun laws in the state of Oregon that is the sole responsibility of the State legislature. The only power afforded cities is to determine where a loaded gun maybe carried when the person carrying does not have a CHL.

Charlie might want to read up on the law. As would it be good for people here before they get all excited

Yeah lets not let them know how we feel about their direction and support.

We should wait till they are kicking in our doors.

That will make our lives easier for now.

I saw this on the news this morning. Apparently he joined bloombergs gun grabbing group ? ( mayors against illegal guns )

Sigh.....

I don't understand wtf is wrong with these people.

There are probably tens of thousands that are telling them now, will they listen?

They do listen when they finally realize it could contribute to them losing office eventually.

It is very easy to send an e-Mail to your congressman and senators, mayor etc.

It does help unless people don't do it.

Also if you can buy more years of membership with the NRA right now that is a really good idea.

Its a good idea but I don't think it will work, especially here in Portland,Oregon.

I agree. I just think at this point it's reactive instead of proactive. I am not sure enough letters could have been sent for them to change their minds. Tomorrow or in a few days, we'll see.

People are correct - the PDX city council cannot regulate firearms.

ORS 166.170:

State Preemption, very cool.

Someone needs to post this on his wall.

166.170 State preemption. (1) Except as expressly authorized by state statute, the authority to regulate in any matter whatsoever the sale, acquisition, transfer, ownership, possession, storage, transportation or use of firearms or any element relating to firearms and components thereof, including ammunition, is vested solely in the Legislative Assembly.
(2) Except as expressly authorized by state statute, no county, city or other municipal corporation or district may enact civil or criminal ordinances, including but not limited to zoning ordinances, to regulate, restrict or prohibit the sale, acquisition, transfer, ownership, possession, storage, transportation or use of firearms or any element relating to firearms and components thereof, including ammunition. Ordinances that are contrary to this subsection are void. [1995 s.s. c.1 §1]

Portland Mayor Charlie Hales urges ban on assault weapons, high-capacity magazines | OregonLive.com

"According to the agenda submitted by Hales, the city would support state legislation "to protect public safety by prohibiting the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.''

"Military-style weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines have no place on our streets. They are designed to kill large numbers of people quickly, and they have no other use in civilian hands,'' the agenda says.

The agenda was drafted by the city's Office of Government Relations based on input from commissioners, city bureaus and the public, according to the mayor."
