Is it illegal to add a mag tube extension (allowing for 6+ capacity) to a foreign made shotgun? It would appear that it is but maybe I am missing something?

"Does an individual need a license to make a firearm for personal use?

No, a license is not required to make a firearm solely for personal use. However, a license is required to manufacture firearms for sale or distribution. The law prohibits a person from assembling a non–sporting semiautomatic rifle or shotgun from 10 or more imported parts, as well as firearms that cannot be detected by metal detectors or x–ray machines. In addition, the making of an NFA firearm requires a tax payment and advance approval by ATF."

Nonsporting Firearms
… such as handguns which do not meet the sporting purpose criteria on ATF F 5330.5 (Form 4590), any rifle or shotgun with a folding stock or folding bayonet, and shotguns having a fixed magazine with a capacity of more than 5 cartridges and certain military style semiautomatic rifles and shotguns.

If no to the the above 3 questions I would say you are probably fine adding a mag extension.

I'm not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV, so take it for what it's worth.

Read up on US code 922r compliance. It applies to all imported auto loading firearms. It comes down to how many foreign made parts the firearm is composed of.

922r was never really a thing. No one paid any attention to it and no one was ever prosecuted over it.
Atf had a conference call/ meeting a month or so ago about the pistol brace registration and they clarified that 922r only applied to importers.

There have been people prosecuted for 922r. Few; but some.

ATF verbal statements about the brace amnesty program should not be depended on as a defense especially in contexts completely different than where the statement was made.

Now everyone can do whatever they want, I am not a cheerleader for these laws. I'm just pointing out that people should make educated decisions.
