I always thought the 5 round rule only applied to semi auto rifles, but what about bolt actions?

My Ruger Scout came with a 10 rounder and I haven't had a chance to find a 5 rounder, rather not have to if I do not need to.

Yes the round limit is for semi-auto's only. Just FYI, searching Google for "ODFW Big Game Regs" brings up a link to the regulations. They are a PDF. Once open in your browser, hold Ctrl (control) and press F. This will open up a find box. Simple type in the word your looking for, in this case "magazine" and scroll through the results. The find function makes the Regs much easier to reference.

Hunt with a 30 if you want. While not a hunter myself I've gotten into this argument with hunters numerous times. Same goes with silencers. I haven't looked at this year's synopsis but in the past it's completely legal. I even called OSP and got into an argument with them bout silencers. They told me, (I should clarify, some chick who answered the phone...) that I couldn't because silencers are illegal. I told her she was an idiot.......

When was this? You talked to dispatch, and while they do what they can to answer questions, I would always suggest asking to speak with a trooper, or in this case game trooper. After all the dispatcher isn't writing tickets and they are not sworn.

I would say roughly 2-3 years ago. I asked to speak to a supervisor who told me the exact same thing. This whole incident took place because of an argument I was having with a vehicle load of coworkers who are hunters. They said I couldn't and I said I could. It was all on speaker phone for everyone to hear.

A trooper told me this a few years ago; so this is what I go by.

"Only migratory bird regs restrict the size of a magazine; however, the number of rounds is restricted to 5 on big game".

Hunting grouse with a .22 LR that has 13 rounds in the tube is ok. A 30 round mag is ok as long as there are only 5.

Hunting big game with a double-stacked auto or a six-shooter....I don't know about that one

Page 20 in this year's big game regs state otherwise (maximum mag capacity of 5).

My coworker just said it was 4 years ago and I got the number out of the synopsis......

Page-20 of the 2015 ODFW regulations state:

CENTERFIRE FIREARM

■ Fully automatic firearms prohibited.
■ Semiautomatic rifles with a magazine capacity greater than five cartridges prohibited (except for western gray squirrel).
■ Military or full-metal jacket bullets in original or altered form prohibited.
■ Hunters may use any muzzleloader with any ignition type, except matchlock, any legal sight, any propellant, or any bullet type during

So, reading WHAT IS WRITTEN:

1. NO full-auto anything.

2. Semi-auto RIFLES; magazine CAPACITY not to exceed 5-rounds. 5 in the mag, and IF you must... one in the chamber, but if you need more than 1 or 2 rounds... o_O:rolleyes: You must put a limiter/block in it if it's not already factory limited to 5 rounds, NOT just "under-load" it. If you're using a bolt-action, pump-action, lever-action, or break-action firearm you can have a drum-magazine on it if you want.

Since the regulations state semi-auto RIFLES, mag limits don't apply to semi-auto handguns.

This is for big game hunting, game bird hunting with shotguns is limited to 3-rounds total, two in the mag (with limiter) and one in the chamber.

Capiche? o_O

I have a question, being the Yugo SKS is designed by the factory to allow the turning off at the gas switch which disables semi-auto. If one had a Yugo SKS and kept the switch in the OFF position ( non-semi) would it be legal ?
Or does it fall under the same idea that if it has a prohibited or limited option then that is where it applies ?

Case of full Auto, which could be switched to semi-auto but isn't allowed, but a firearm such as the SKS semi-auto Yugo that can be used as a bolt action ? Our non action rifle.

Just curious because these tend to come with 10rounders and sure a block is legal but wondered. Anyone know ?

Semi-auto is semi-auto. I had a buddy who hunted with an SKS and after talking with an OSP game trooper we made a block out of UHMW and put it under the spring in the magazine so you could only load 5 rounds. You can also be really cheap and use Lego or a block of wood. There is no reason to chance when a cheap solution is available.

a box stock Winchester model 94 30-30 holds 7 rds in the mag. Ever hear of someone being told they needed a plug in a model 94? Ot's semiauto only. And silencers are legal as well.

Go to sportsmans and buy the ruger plastic 5 round mag.

It is lighter and is the perfect hight to protect the trigger guard.

Just my .02 after buying all three plastic mags (3, 5 & 10).

Hunting regulations are readily available in the FREE synopsis and online. Very clear and easy to comprehend. SEMI-AUTO WITH MAGAZINE CAPACITY MORE THAN FIVE PROHIBITED. copy? Oh and that SKS with a 30 round mag hanging out the bottom even with "Owner mods" will probably get you in deep bubblegum with the law. Why not just hunt legal or accept getting a ticket. FWIW a nice new hunting rifle will cost a whole bunch less than the fines . YMMV, and i have a hunch it will.;)

remember: nothing in this country is ILLEGAL to do unless there is a law prohibiting it. That's where that line comes from "land of the free". Now ponder what your legislators are doing all day long....

no law, can do.

Never needed more than one round, myself.
