I have a lee enfield .303 bolt action rifle my father gave to me when I was a kid. On the right side of the receiver is stamped a crown with the letters gr under it then under that is enfield 1922 then under that is SHTLE then under that is the numeral V. The rear sights are a sliding ladder type. The detatchable magazine is the usual 10 rounds and it has the magazine cutoff lever. The gun is in decent shape ie. bore and wood. The gun has other similar features of mk3's and 4's. I have read an article in the past referencing this model as an experimental mk5. Any info would be appreciated.

About 20,000 made.

The SMLE design was fairly expensive to manufacture because of the many forging and machining operations required. In the 1920s several experiments were carried out to help with these problems, reducing the number of complex parts. The SMLE Mk V (later Rifle No. 1 Mk V), used a new receiver-mounted aperture sighting system, which moved the rear sight from its former position on the barrel. The increased gap resulted in an improved sighting radius, improving sighting accuracy, and the aperture improved speed of sighting (making it also known as a "battle sight"). The magazine cutoff was also reintroduced, and an additional band was added near the muzzle for additional strength during bayonet use.Unfortunately, this design was found to be even more complicated and expensive to manufacture than the Mk III, and so was not developed or issued beyond a trial production of this rifle numbered approximately 20,000 units, produced between 1922 and 1924 at RSAF Enfield.

That is a very desirable rifle to Enfield collectors. It is indeed a No I MkV "trials" rifle. I had a very low serial example, sold it a couple years ago for almost 1500 dollars. If the rifle is "Original", it would fetch some good money.
Look at the safety, is it "V" marked?...They usually have "III" safety's installed.
Do the numbers all match? Bolt, receiver, nosecap, Bbl etc? The wood should also match.
Very collectable rifle, if you have more pics i'd like to see them.
