Hi All:

I am trying to verify the production date of a shotgun I will be selling soon. The only numbers on the gun that I believe would be the serial number is S 963. The gun is in great condition. I has sat in a safe most of its life. I will try to post a few pictures. If anybody can tell me if the number I mentioned is the serial number I appreciate it. From what I can gather the gun may have been produced in 1946.

Thank You:

James

Got to love the color case hardening on field grades - beautiful -- try The L.C. Smith Collectors Association. I think this may be in the 1946 time range when the troops came back from WW2. Some models are better verified via paying for the research letter to be generated from LCSCA .

In 1945 LC Smith took over the bankrupt Hunter Arms Co (Nov 26, 1945) - new production from that point under LC Smith commenced with serial number prefixes of "FWS" (FWS1 -FWS 56,796). Your actual build date then was prior to 1946 -- the letter authenticating the gun and its history is a great investment. My resource is "LC Smith Shotguns by Lt Col William Brophy 111977 page 193.
