Any bum assaulting me will get more than a cot and a sammich. This is not a threat. I don't go looking for trouble, but after 2 MVAs resulting in concussions and a heart attack that shut down heartbeat and respiration for about 10 minutes I really can't afford to get hurt any more and I'm not physically capable of running or going mano-a-mano. A punch to the head or chest really could result in my death or great bodily harm. Also, I know I look to any subhuman predators like a 3-legged wildebeest looks to a lioness. Therefore, if threatened I have to take it seriously and I never go out in public unarmed.

You got that right man. I had to chase off a transient today that was putting stuff into our neighbors trash can. Not trash mind you, stuff that they were "just saving for later so it wouldn't get stolen." Also known as trespassing and illegal dumping.

Squirting them with a hose comes in pretty low on the Scale Of Violence in responding to less than lethal situations. If they attack you, then ROE have changed from nuisance to assault.
