A Connecticut judge on Friday dismissed legal claims against the gun industry brought by families of some of those killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.
A gunman killed 20 children and six adults at the school in Newtown, Conn., with a Bushmaster AR-15-style rifle on Dec. 14, 2012. Lawyers for the victims' families crafted the 2014 lawsuit to slip through a narrow exception to a federal law that shields the gun industry from legal claims.
They alleged the companies involved in making and selling the military-style rifle used in the attack entrusted a weapon of war to civilians without regard for the "unreasonable and egregious risk of physical injury to others."
