Is the 5.45x39 as good as the 223?

I've been looking at the 5.56x39 as a possible choice as a SHTF caliber. You can get this in an AR platform and ammo is very cheap. I know its corrosive but 7.5 cents a round I can afford to buy a lot of cleaning supply's.

and it boils down to what kind of shooting you are going to do

I think he's talking about 5.45x39 Soviet. He mentioned corrosive.

It's been recommended that you swap out the hammer spring with a more powerful one that is better suited for the harder primers of the 5.45x39.

Is it only the surplus ammunition that has the air space and tumbles or does new production Wolf etc do this as well?

A buddy and I bought a couple S&W 5.45X39 uppers last summer. Haven't put a lower under mine yet, but we have shot the h... out of his at least 3 cases with out a problem. They seem to like the russian 7n6, and clean up well with a few shots of windex. Happy shooting'
