Back in the Old West, holdout derringers up the sleeve were a thing among some gamblers...

Some relevant reverences:

I first learned of these from Time-Life Books's "The Old West" series, I forget which volume but it was either The Gamblers or The Gunfighters. If memory serves, the holdout was activated by spreading your knees.

Taped to his wrist/arm so that in case he was "excited" (or lost his grip on it, somehow).....instead of dropping it and wasting time having to look for it.....he could merely flee. Thus, no evidence would be left behind.
